I'm Not Weird, I Have Sidby Chynna T. Laird
"I'm Not Weird, I Have SID" was inspired by the story I wrote for Chicken Soup For The Soul: Children With Special Needs where I explained to an inquisitive little girl who'd asked me why my daughter, Jaimie, acted "weird". That experience made me realize that I not only had to find a way to explain to Jaimie about her Sensory Integration Dysfunction (SID) in such a way she could explain it to others but also so others would understand what Jaimie goes through.
That's exactly what "I'm Not Weird, I Have SID" does. It's told through the perspective of four-year old Alexandra. She explains how SID feels, how it affects her ability to function in her environment and how she learned to talk to other people about SID.
The story is told through the eyes and voice of a child and the illustrations bring life to the words. Helping others understand children with special needs will bring respect for these children and make them seem less different. After all, through awareness comes understanding and that's powerful.
