All Music Guide - Steve Leggett
First issued on LP in 1978 as part of The Recorded Anthology of American Music, I'm on My Journey Home is a virtual aural dictionary of southern American vernacular singing. The end result is an impressive survey of rural singing forms in America, and while the listening experience here can get a bit eerie and uncomfortable at times (some of the ballad singers are pretty raw and pitch-challenged), it opens the eyes (and ears) to the vast possibilities of the human voice. The sound of two tobacco auctioneers soaring in tandem on the block like two jazz saxophones in locked harmony is worth the price of admission alone. Vocal teachers and scholars may well find this disc indispensable.
