Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The producers of National Public Radio show ``Hole in the Sock'' have put together taped observations from preteens about family life and presented it with all its natural humor, pathos and idiosyncratic wisdom. Grouped by chapters that cover such issues as family position, jealousies, competition, sharing rooms and good times, the book also ventures into special spheres of being an only child or part of a stepfamily. With next-to-no changes by the compilers, the material is endowed with a childlike exuberance, with normal kids who trick their sibs with fibs, bribe them and otherwise do very normal brother-sister things. On balance, being part of a family is very enjoyable, as is this book. Ages 8-12. (April)

Gr 4-7 Arnold and Loeb asked kids to talk about their siblings. The children speak spontaneously about every imaginable aspect of sibling relations: sharing a room; tattling; rivalry; fighting; babysitting; and being the oldest, middle, youngest, or only child in a family. Their answers are often hilarious, but they can also be poignant, as when a girl shares how her older brother helped her cope with the death of their father. Karas' childlike line drawings add to the appeal of this book. There is no end to the number of imaginative extension activities that could be used in conjunction with I'm Telling. This is a fine, humorous, tender, and most insightful book that deserves a large audience. Reluctant readers especially may flock to it; the subject matter is highly motivating and the print is not forbidding. Jerry D. Flack, University of Colorado, Colorado Springs
