Great idea! Don't be intimidated!

I've read this book (and the others in the series) to my daughter for a year now. She is now five. It has helped her learn to recognize English words and learn how to pronounce French words. She absolutely loves this book and asks to read it at least three times a week. She loves learning new languages (Spanish from Dora the Explorer, French from me and this series) and this book allows her to see what the words look like as well as what they sound like.

Ideally, the book works like this: The story is written in both English and (literal) French translations. You read the story entirely in English the first few times so that both you and your child become acquainted with it. Then, you read both the English and the French lines ("I'm too big" "Je suis trop gros" "I'm too tall" "Je suis trop grande", etc.) Finally, you read the story completely in French.

With this book, both you and your child learn some of the basics of French. There is a mini-lesson in the back of the book for adults, including proper punctuations (in REAL words, not linguistics symbols. i.e. "suis" is pronounced "swee") and how masculine and feminine adjectives differ in pronunciation.
