Ima Robot [Explicit Lyrics]

All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
As nu-metal and the last vestiges of grunge have waned, the popular embrace of "real" or "garage" rock has caused an uptick of ultrafashionable musicians who artfully subtract the more inaccessible parts of genres like slutty punk rock, fey new wave, and goth, and use the highly brand-identifiable remainder to spruce up what are essentially hooky pop songs. Hot Hot Heat and Yeah Yeah Yeahs have each performed this operation with skill; now, Ima Robot wants a piece of the action.
The quintet is led by the histrionic yelp of Alex Ebert, who sounds like Suede's Brett Anderson doing a Johnny Rotten impersonation and sports a bizarre haircut suggestive of Zan from the Wonder Twins. Besides a guitarist and electronicist, the band also includes bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen and drummer Joey Waronker, two session pros who are also veterans of Beck's band. The L.A. force is strong in these guys, and it shows in the refined, curiously vapid quality of their music. "Dynomite," "Song, No. 1," and "Alive" are the first three songs on the album, but they're also the most representative barring the cheeky, effete rap of "Black Jettas". The songs can be called so much -- glammy punk, the Escape Club meets Love and Rockets -- but when the makeup comes off they're just well-done pop songs, as much sticky fun as a fruit roll-up, but unfortunately just as substantive. Ima Robot -- especially the lyrically and visually outrageous Ebert -- seem to understand this. It seems to be part of the fun to reference the right references while rocking the cheap seats with easy power chords "A Is for Action" and mashups of Bowie and electro-pop "Philosophee". And maybe it is fun, depending on your point of view. After all, many of the groups Ima Robot pays tribute to were equally as empty. But Ima Robot's fancy, yet expensively dirty version of this game just seems particularly affected, and ultimately too derivative to fully enjoy.

    BUY THE ALBUM

Its hard to sum up IMA Robot's musical style in a few words. Basically their music is genus. It is a sound unlike anything else on the radio. The album is awesome and if you like them then definitely check them out live. They put on quite a show. Buy the CD, support the band. You wont regret it

    This band is the it

I first heard the band live and that is where it struck me. This band is truly “dynamite”! Many people compare them to Hot Hot Heat but truly there is no comparison. This particularly CD will take you on an adventure of happy mood swings with the urge to dance. The lead singer reminds me of Bowie in his Ziggy Stardust days. This CD is defiantly a must have. Their energy through out the tracks will put you in a euphoric mood. Give this band a try and see for your self..

    >>>>NEWSFLASH<<<<<<<<IMA ROBOT IS F-ING AMAZING

There are not enough words in my vocabulary or possibly the entire American lexicon to describe the music of Ima Robot. They are amazing. From start to finish, this self-titled major-label debut is a collection of genius/hump-the-air or the chair/amzing/entertaining/inspiring sounds which comprise an amazing network of songs. After first putting this cd into my car stereo three months ago, it has not left my side, with each listen comes even more enjoyment of the band, of the cd. This is the only cd Ive ever encountered where I can actually listen to the entire disk altheway through without having skip over the weaker songs. All in all, this such an amazing release, and such an amazing band. The only experience which can actually parallel the cd itself is seeing this band live. THEY F-ING ROCK!!!!!!!! BUY THE CD>>>>>>SAVE YOURSELF FROM THE DREGS OF POPULAR CULTURE>>>>>>>>INVEST YOUR ALEXANDER HAMILTON INTO THE GREATEST CD OF THE 21st CENTURY!!!!!

    IMA FAN

Believe the hype, buy the CD and buckle in because no other band will take you on a journey quite like IMA Robot. IMA's live performance far exceeds any that I've ever seen due to their intense energy and charisma. This electricity is not hindered by the studio as it translates flawlessly onto tape. Your behind will want to dance and your mouth will be powerless to singing along. Just know that the longer you've owned the CD the more bragging rights you'll have as the band gets bigger and bigger.

    Embrace the Bot

The first time I heard of Ima Robot was during the last ten or so seconds the music station was playing the track 'Dynomite.' Though I didn't get a good grasp of the excellent sound of the band, the name intrigued me quite thoroughly, and I had to know more. I was certainly not disappointed. Ima Robot presents a fresh sound in the midst of today's obsession with pop-fueled rock. With a beat for dancing, fun new-wave inspired qualities, and one trippy video for 'Dynomite', you can't go wrong.

    Ima and Me

One of the best ways to get into a new band is to see them live, and i was fortunate enough to be exposed to Ima Robot last fall in this way. After buying the album, i was stunned by how much of the energy perceived in the live show emanates from the disc. This album is really a track-by-track work of indie art. Ima functions on a perfect blend of indie rock (the excellent "Dynomite" and "12=3 (Here Come the Doctors" are standout examples), psychedelic progress (the danceable "Dirty Mind" and Bowie-esque "What are We Made From"), and absolute insanity (the catty and visceral "Here Come the Bombs" and the special track "Black Jettas," essentially an anaecdote of every Ex Boyfriend's worst nightmare). Some tracks, such as "Alive" and "Philosophofee" are reminiscent of early Brit Rock bands like Suede and Pulp in both vocal and musical style, and impressive homage to a long-missed era. The record perhaps shines most on "Scream," and perhaps many of 2003's albums would have been better if they too only had one song that was really about "love." Ima Robot's debut treads the line between attitude and art, and inevitably between emotion and energetic frenzy. What emerges is a disc well worth keeping around for the long-haul, and a promise of even better things to come.

On a scale of 1-5 Stars, This cd deserves 12

You know when you're in one of those great moods and you just want to dance around your bedroom "Risky Business" style? Ima Robot's song "Dynomite" off of their self titled album is perfect for one of those moods. In fact, the whole cd itself (with the exception of perhaps one or two tracks) will fit your need to dance just right. With the mechanical sound effects underneath the bass lines and the amazing hooks, you will not be able to stop moving throughout all 12 songs. Ima Robot has got the kind of sound that won't let your body stop jerking and the lyrics won't stop ringing in your head. I found this band on a fluke and I am so glad that I did. I can't stop listening to them. My friends think I'm crazy when I won't stop singing these insane lyrics about ex-girlfriends and black jettas; but once they hear it, they understand why. Even my mother, despite its explicit lyrical content, admits that she cannot stop dancing to it. This promises to be the best investment you could possibly make on any cd this year!

IMA ROBOT beats all the rest

I have reviewed and listened to many albums this month from jay-z to junior senior. Ima Robot is by far one of the top 10. This CD ranges from all different beats and melodies. The lyrics are catchy and they are new and fresh. If you're interested in something out of the ordinary pick up their new CD.

    Ima Robot rocks my socks!

Tired of today's music scene? In a music world of grunge and alternative, Ima Robot takes me back with a definite classic rock influence, reminiscent of good 80's New Wave such as the Cars, and also of David Bowie or Steely Dan through clever, intelligent lyrics disguised with catchy tunes. The band is surprisingly fresh and original, however. "Dirty Life" and “Scream” are some of the highlights on this album, while “Black Jettas” is a comical treat as a bonus track.
