Description: This is a new book written by pathologists, computer scientists, and optical scientists to introduce basic aspects of image analysis to diagnostic pathologists desiring an introduction to the field, with particular emphasis on clinical applications.
Purpose: The purpose is to describe the optical and mathematical foundations of image analysis techniques and to describe quantitative applications of those techniques in diagnostic pathology. As implied in the title, this "primer" is just that, easily readable in a few days and concisely written. It is most timely because quantitative measurement of prognostic markers at the single cell level is increasingly expected of the modern pathology laboratory.
Audience: This book is intended for diagnostic pathologists desiring to use image analysis for quantitation of prognostic markers for routine surgical pathology and cytology clinical cases. It is perhaps too simplistic for experts in the field to readily use. The authors are all experts in various fields who write succinctly at an appropriate level for the intended readers.
Features: The book is well referenced with recent material and has excellent black-and-white and color illustrations. The order of topics discussed begins with optical and mathematical foundations of quantitation and ends with clinical applications, a logical order.
Assessment: This is a small book, easy to read, and not intimidating to the reader desiring to explore image analysis as a diagnostic tool. It covers most of the topics related to image analysis for diagnostic applications quite well and does not claim to be an exhaustive treatise. Much of this material is available only in the journals, and as such, this work is highly recommended for pathologists and medical school libraries.
