Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
YA-- The blending of McPherson's readable, accurate, and at times passionate prose with Kunstler's powerful, dramatic, and kinetic paintings provides readers with attractive and enlightening visual passages. After reading the text and looking carefully at the 72 paintings along with the detailed maps, students will come away with a clearer understanding and deeper knowledge of the Civil War in all of its grimness. The series of portraits of generals on both sides is an exciting addition to this pictorial treasure trove.-- Peggy H. Mooney, Fairfax County Public Library, VA
Gilbert Taylor
Based on the reputation of his "Battle Cry of Freedom" , McPherson reigns supreme among living historians. In this attractively produced volume, though, his bare-bones outline plays second fiddle to 70 full-color paintings by Mort Kunstler. His skill as a representational artist is such, according to a news article, that fanatics "comb his works with magnifying glasses . . . to gauge accuracy," and they rarely find fault. His subjects cover the standards (Gettysburg, Antietam, portraits of each side's chieftains), but McPherson encouraged him to also depict less celebrated clashes, such as Wilson's Creek and Fort Fisher. From a purist's perspective, some nonbattle scenes skirt sentimentality (e.g., Stonewall Jackson and wife; Lee's farewell to his troops), but Kunstler's talent comes out in his marvelously evocative control of subdued lighting, especially in "Morgan's Raider" and "General Taylor at Swift Run Gap". When teamed with a McPherson, this painter fully enlivens the terrifying drama of combat, to the certain delight and reflection of many. An outstanding (and incredibly affordable) album.
