Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-Jeffrey Holiwell is always in trouble with his sixth-grade teacher for clowning around, not turning in his homework, and writing stories during class. On one particularly bad day, after his teacher confiscates his story notebook, the 11-year-old is astonished to find a talking cat in his bedroom. The feline claims to be the boy's alter ego, and says that he has come to help him. Although no one else can see or hear him, the creature causes trouble everywhere he goes but also provides just the inspiration that Jeffrey needs to prove to the world that he is a serious writer. Unfortunately, the book is marred by an oversimplified plot and unbelievable dialogue. The people Jeff confides in seem to accept the animal's existence without much incredulity or reservation. The black-and-white drawings are inconsistent in quality, and add little to the story. Still, the protagonist is a likable and believable character, and young writers may sympathize with his struggles.-Ashley Larsen, Woodside Library, CA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
The Midwest Book Review

When sixth-grade class clown Jeffrey Holiwell makes fun of a writing assignment, his teacher confiscates the notebook he’s always scribbling stories in rather when he should be doing his school work. Glumly on his way home, teacher’s note in hand, Jeff meets Mortimer, a mischievous and snippy cat that only Jeff can see or hear and whose arrival on the scene results in total chaos from classroom to ice cream parlor. Imagicat takes young readers on a boy meets trouble-making feline adventure that is original, entertaining, exceptionally well written, and totally engaging.(Midwest Book Review,Children's Bookwatch)
