Editorial Reviews

Black Issues Book Review
The suspense that Hardrick captures will always leave you waiting to see what happens next, but the truth is, you'll never guess. This novel doesn't skimp on any of the drama associated with being a teenager in today's hectic society. Hardrick does a marvelous job of recreating a true-to-life world that lures readers into the lives of regular 'can't-wait-till-I'm-grown' teenagers trying to find a place for themselves in the real world.

Booklist
Hardrick's good intentions are obvious; she promotes higher education, and clean living and casts the alternative in a uniformly squalid light. The abundant messages aside, many readers will respond to the dramatic plotlines and Hardrick's flair for dialogue.— (Feb., 15, 2004)
Union Leader
Imani in Never Say Goodbye is a document of realism, a revelation to teenagers, and young and older adults about what can happen and how whole lives can be destroyed by teens living out the fantasies promised in movies and television stories.—(Feb., 19, 2004)
Voices of Youth Advocates
As cautionary fiction, this book is a success. This title will attract readers and offer them food for thought.—(Dec., 2003)
School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-Seventeen-year-old Imani's hopes for getting into Howard University-on a basketball scholarship or otherwise-are nearly dashed during her tumultuous senior year, primarily due to her friend and teammate Dominique's rapid descent into drug abuse. When Dominique, stoned on pot, obliviously collides with her during practice, it results in a broken wrist and, it would seem, a whole set of broken dreams for Imani. Dominique tries to make up for it by taking the team to the city championships by milking some short-lived energy and confidence out of cocaine. Just when Imani is ready to forgive and forget, Dominique switches their urine samples during a random drug test. Meanwhile, Imani is surrounded by characters and subplots meant to illustrate the consequences of a whole catalog of bad choices, including engaging in premarital sex, acquiescing to domestic violence, and succumbing to the allure of fast money. Working-class Imani and her affluent boyfriend resist these evils, though, and manage to prevail while also illustrating the class tensions that can surface between African Americans who have realized economic success and those still trying desperately to get a piece of it. The story's primary weakness is its transparent and predictable didacticism that, however well intended, seems to be preaching strictly to the choir.-Jeffrey Hastings, Highlander Way Middle School, Howell, MI Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

This Book Got Me Back On Track

I just finished reading Imani in Never Say Goodbye. It helped me understand that I can get to college in many ways that is why I love this book so much. This book also helps parents understand their teens more and how much we have to go through to stay alive and well in today's teen society to fit in. This book and Imani in Young Love & Deception also helped me straighten out my life and got me back on track to do good in school and I am so grateful for that.

    Hardrick Does It Again!

Another incredible read from Jackie Hardrick. It is very timely for today's young adults. I felt in many ways connected to the various characters in the story and I am hitting 40. Hardrick has done a tremendous job in keeping her fingers on the pulse of what is real in the lives of teenagers and quite frankly - experiences that adults face in raising young adults. Very well done and a great read. Being the speed reader that I am - I completed the book in 2 days!

    Unforgetable

The characters in Imani in Never Say Goodbye and Imani in Young Love & Deception are unforgetable. You'll hate some of them, you'll love some of them, but I think you'll enjoy them all.

    Great Book!

This great book made me realize it's not worth all of the drama that the characters went through especially the ones doing drugs. I will just BE MYSELF! I thank Jackie Hardrick for writing a great book.

    Great Author & Great Books!

I read both of this author's books, and I couldn't put either of them down until I finished. I loved all of the characters and the situations in the books. I am an avid reader and an aspiring writer, and I just want the author to know how great I think she is! I hope she writes more books.

    Really Good Too!

My older cousin ( age 22) turned me on to this author's books. I read this one and Imani in Young Love & Deception in less than four days! I just want to say that I think Ms. Hardrick is a great author and I will read all of her books.

    Great Book!

I swear from the very first page, I was immediately hooked and I sometimes tuned my boyfriend out on the phone while I was reading. I read during class, lunch, on the bus and while I ate dinner. It seemed like I was talking about real people to my friends when I told them about the book. I remember telling a girl-friend 'Girl, I can't believe what Dominique did!' and they asked, 'Who's Dominique?' Whenever I had a minute I read. I guess it took all of that for me to say thank-you for writing this book and plueeze keep more coming because it was awesome! I believe this book was God-sent to inspire me to keep pursuing my own dreams of one day going to college.

A great storyteller keeps it real and keeps it going

Jackie Hardrick takes up where she left off in her previous book. As before, the teenage characters face inner and outer obstacles in their life journeys. Fast-paced action keeps the reader turning pages. A great book for family discussion, since this book touches on many current problems and issues. Highly recommended!

Imani in Never Say Goodbye: A Contemporarory Young Adult Novel

This book was really good, but it was not as good as the frist one. It didn't answer any of the questions I had from the other book. What it did do is give me more questions that needed to be answered. Even though it did that it was still a really good book.
