Immigration is a comprehensive examination of U.S. immigration policies and their impact on the nation, combining a historical overview and a guide to how immigration works in practice. In this one-volume compendium on the history, politics, culture, and contributions of immigrants to the United States, the author uses his experience in key immigration policy posts to provide an insider's perspective on a broad array of immigration-related issues.

Offering a detached, unbiased analysis of the economic, fiscal, and other impacts of current immigration policies, he recommends reforms and policy solutions for the thorniest immigration issues, such as illegal immigration. But the book does not ignore the fact that immigration has always enriched and strengthened our nation. Along with policy considerations, it also encompasses enlightening profiles detailing the many contributions of individual immigrants in such diverse areas as science, sports, the military, and business.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"This timely book offers a concise and lucid overview of the volatile subject of immigration in the US. . . . Overall, this excellent study adds a dose of reality to a debate driven by ideology and political opportunism. . . . Highly recommended. All levels of students; faculty; researchers; professionals; and general readers."

"A useful and timely addition."

Gr 9 Up—This title uses research and economic theory to explain the current situation in the U.S. as well as to posit possible solutions. After a brief overview of the history of immigration in the country, the topics of both legal and illegal immigration are covered in separate in-depth chapters. The special cases of high-skilled immigrants and refugees and asylees are dealt with in their own chapters. The debate over immigration, the challenges of assimilation, and contributions that immigrants have made to the American economy help complete a well-rounded overview of the subject. The conclusion's unique question-and-answer format allows readers to find quick answers to controversial topics. The weakness of this format is that the issue, having been dealt with earlier in the text, does not always give the impression of being unbiased (even though it is) because the research behind the argument was presented elsewhere in the book. A reference to the section where the topic is dealt with in more depth would have been a particularly helpful addition to the conclusion. A useful and timely addition.—Kristin Anderson, Columbus Metropolitan Library System, OH
