Overview

Immunobiology: The Immune System in Health and Disease is the current, authoritative introductory immunology textbook that leads the way into the 21st century. It is cutting-edge, definitive and lucid. Now in its Fourth Edition, Immunobiology has been used by over 100,000 undergraduates, post-graduates, medical students, and researchers. Immunobiology presents the field of immunology from the viewpoint of the host's response to infection.

NEW FEATURES AND UPDATES:

The new 'Signaling through Lymphocyte Receptors' chapter is a reorganization, clarification, and expansion of the B-cell and T-cell signaling information presented in the previous edition. It includes information on:

  • newly understood cytokine signaling pathways.
  • how signals 'switch off' some immunological pathways.
  • cell death-regulating signaling pathways.
  • how signaling maintains lymphocyte homeostasis.
  • The 'Antigen Recognition by T Lymphocytes' chapter has been fully updated to include new information and illustrations such as the structural detail of TCR-MHC interactions. It also includes antigen processing by MHC class I and II, and how viruses interfere with these pathways.
  • New information on cytokines and chemokines reflecting current research interests.
  • Updates on transplant rejection including a new section on chronic organ rejection.

SPECIAL FEATURES OF PEDAGOGICAL VALUE:

  • Easy to understand and assimilate full-color figures using distinct iconography, including new icons to illustrate signaling pathways such as cytoplasmic kinases and transcription factors.
  • New user-friendly book style and easy to use sequential pagination.
  • New-look cover.
  • Fully up to date and informative CD antigen table.
  • Cytokine summary table.
  • Chemokine summary table.
  • At-a-glance biographies of notable immunologists.
  • Extensive glossary.

The book contains predominantly color illustrations, with some black-and-white illustrations.

A textbook that keeps pace with the fast-changing field of immunology.

Editorial Reviews

Marion C. Cohen
This is the fourth edition of a basic textbook of immunology authored by four well-known researchers in the field. The previous edition was published in 1997. As in previous editions, the purpose is to function as an introductory text for medical students, advanced undergraduate biology students, and graduate students. It is an up-to-date—at least up to the time of publication—overview of the field that would be useful not only to the students for whom it was targeted but also for researchers who need some specific information in some aspect of immunology with which they have little familiarity. The book is aimed at medical students, graduate students, and some undergraduates. The authors are considered experts in the specific areas in which they wrote chapters and there is no question of their capability in providing good overviews. Almost all aspects of immunology are described. An obvious deficiency is the lack of a chapter on the evolution of immunology. It is very clearly written but probably requires some familiarity with the subject's arcane language. It is not likely that most students would be capable of learning immunology from this book alone, but it is an excellent supplement to lectures. The figures are particularly good and they are available on a CD-ROM for purchase. The format follows previous editions, starting with basic immunology and going on to immunopathology. A chapter on signaling has been added. References for each chapter have been included. There are three appendixes: the CD antigens, cytokines and their receptors, and chemokines and their receptors. A glossary is also included. The use of color in the figures is very attractive. Thistextbook has been fine-tuned as it has gone through its various editions. It is an excellent source of information for advanced students. There is a lot of material packed into it that may scare away students who want to learn only the minimum required for exams. There are several texts written at this level and this one compares favorably to them. Immunology changes so fast that this updated edition should be well received.

This textbook is intended for introductory immunology courses for medical students, advanced undergraduate biology students, or graduate students. It covers immunobiology and innate immunity, the recognition of antigen, the development of mature lymphocyte receptor repertoires, the adaptive immune response, the immune system in health and disease, and the evolution of the immune system. A companion CD-ROM contains 27 animations. The authors are affiliated with Yale University, the Imperial College School of Medicine, and the Anthony Nolan Research Institute. Annotation c. **** An annual reference for those who seek state legislative information (e.g., the status of a bill, biographical information on a legislator, a description of a state's legislative process, how to get a copy of a bill), cited in ARBA 1993 and the Supplement to Sheehy. This updated edition (the 11th) adds key Internet sites and e-mail addresses. It also marks a change from the old 3-ring binder to a new soft cover format. Annotation c. The only immunology book!!

What can i say? THIS BOOK SAVED MY LIFE!! I was forced to buy 'Immunology' by Parslow-Stites, but it was so complex for me , because i didn't know the basics. This is where Janeway shows up. You will quickly learn facts that will help you a lot understanding immunology, and make your lecturer surprises because of the depth of your knowledge. LOTS OF DIAGRAMS and DRAWINGS make this the PERFECT BOOK for Immunology. Don't search more, you've found the book you'll need.

Good anchor in the fast evolving field of immunology

The 5th edition of this classic continues the success of the passed 4 editions. Full equipped with helpful figures the book can be read by experienced and beginners. The construction of the whole book exemplifies clearness ¿ surely not very easy in the field immunology. The introduction ¿Basic concepts in immunology¿ announces the main actors (lymphatic cells and tissue). Actually one should be familiar with those things, but the simple and practical perspective of the book shows what one has already forgotten or never known. And it reads really good. The next chapter continues with the properties of the innate immunity and here things become biochemical ¿ but don¿t worry, everything is being explained from the beginning and stays within human comprehension. The second part covers antigen recognition and the design of antibodies and T-Cell-Receptors. Interesting are the things about MHC-Complex and its influence on T-Cell ¿ mediated immune response. Third part tells you about immune communication and control of the life cycle of lymphocytes. A very good point is the underlining of pretty abstract theoretical truths with clinical relevant examples, like in this chapter with myelomas and leukaemia. Because of this the book gains importance for medicals. Part 4 focuses on T-Cells and their participation in adaptive immunity. After those introductory chapter there follows an application-chapter about infection and immunology. Part 5 is the last big part about diseases of the immune system. This should be read by every physician. The topic is being introduced with a demonstration about techniques of micro organisms/viruses (HSV, Listeria, Mycobacteria, Trypanosoma ¿) with which they escape the immune response (really thrilling !). The following chapters cover immune deficiency syndromes with focus on the gene-dependence of these diseases. I was a little disappointed about the allergy-chapter. Either knowledge has not come to new conclusions or the book does not tell about everything. Also the things about transplantation and auto immunity should be known already. The last chapters show, how physicians can modulate immunity ¿ either by drugs or by vaccination. Interesting is the part, which is only an afterword, about the evolution of the immune system. This should be worked out in more detail. The appendix explains some immunologic methods. The book comes with a well designed and helpful CD-Rom (with animations). The field immunology often seems to be chained by its own dynamic ¿ this book is a pretty good anchor. Especially for medicals.
