Immunohistology and Electron Microscopy of Anaplastic and Pleomorphic Tumors

Overview

This book describes in detail the use of immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy in the examination and study of a wide range of undifferentiated tumors. Such tumors are described with clinical case examples and the plentiful illustrations serve as a guide to recognition and diagnosis. The organization of the book reflects the diagnostic process, with algorithms and diagnostic panels of antibodies to help the pathologist elucidate the nature of the neoplasm. Coverage ranges from basic aspects of ...

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Elizabeth E. Sengupta, MD (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: Authored by credible authorities in surgical pathology, this book covers the basics of immunohistology and diagnostic electron microscopy. Immunohistologic and ultrastructural features of spindle cell and pleomorphic tumors and anaplastic round cell tumors are covered in two chapters. Additional chapters cover immunohistochemical panels to use in specific site differentials, biological parameters, and prognostic markers.
Purpose: The editors' stated purpose is to present a practical approach to the diagnosis of pleomorphic and anaplastic tumors with emphasis on immunohistochemistry.
Audience: The intended audience is residents and experienced surgical pathologists, histotechnologists, and clinicians interested in cancer biology and newer diagnostic techniques. However, some of the chapters are better suited to either one or the other of the intended audience.
Features: The decision trees for immunohistochemical evaluation of tumors are useful. The illustrations are generally pertinent but the lack of color limits their impact; also, the text referring to the illustrations is often several pages distant. The index does not cross reference terms well enough for optimum use of this book as a general reference. The chapter on biologic parameters and prognostic markers is filled with information but seems beyond the purview of the book.
Assessment: I found the format of this information-packed book, which has a narrow focus on anaplastic and pleomorphic tumors, confusing. The information provided is available in other better formatted and better balanced books.
