Description: This slim book is true to its title, "Immunophenotyping for Hematologists."
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to "help hematologists and trainees understand and interpret immunophenotyping results. The authors have rightly identified the need for this reference as much of this testing occurs in remote specialty reference labs, with the ordering clinician receiving only the results yet the responsibility of integrating them into a diagnosis and treatment plan. These are worthy objectives well met by this book."
Audience: This book is intended for and most definitely meets the needs of practicing clinical hematologists and those in training. It will also be of interest to general pathologists or subspecialized hematopathologists (practicing or in fellowship), clinical laboratory scientists (practicing or in training) working with this area of clinical laboratory testing, and anyone interested in understanding how immunophenotyping influences diagnosis of hematological disorders. The authors are well-known authorities.
Features: This deceptively slim 134-page book is a miracle. It achieves its intent completely. There are only four chapters — a brief introduction including cautionary comments about immunophenotyping, a chapter on the "compendium" of antibodies and their expression in normal versus neoplastic cells (i.e., how to select which antibodies to use), a much longer and detailed chapter on the use of immunophenotyping today for hematological neoplasms and "related" conditions, and a final fourth chapter on self-assessment. A major strength of this book is the emphasis on integrating clinical, morphology, and esoteric testing (immunophenotyping, molecular, cytogenetic) into the final diagnosis. The self-assessment chapter is a very humbling experience for testing your diagnostic expertise. The discussions for each of the FRC-Path cases are incredibly enlightening, explaining how the final diagnosis — some very unusual — was achieved while acknowledging other diagnoses could not be excluded despite extensive testing. Just like real-life cases!
Assessment: This is a wonderful, surprisingly comprehensive reference on immunophenotyping and how to integrate results into a final diagnosis. Get it.
