Composites are used extensively in engineering applications. A constant concern is the effect of foreign object impacts on composite structures because significant damage can occur and yet be undetectable by visual inspection. Such impacts can range from the most ordinary at low velocity—a tool dropped on a product—to the hypervelocity impact of space debris on a spacecraft. This book explains how damage develops during impact, the effect of impact-induced damage on the mechanical behavior of structures, and methods of damage prediction and detection. Numerous examples are included to illustrate these topics. Written for graduate students, as well as researchers and practicing engineers working with composite materials, this book presents state-of-the-art knowledge on impact dynamics while requiring only basic understanding of the mechanics of composite materials.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"...a good reference book and should be purchased by those who work on composite structures...the first section of the book can also be used in lectures on theories of beams, plates, and shells." Applied Mechanics Reviews

"This is one of the first books totally devoted to impact on composite structures. Composites have become of increasing importance in structures since the 1940s, and today many structural elements are manufactured from them, particularly in the aerospace excellent book for any advanced student or researcher." Bradley Dodd, The Times Higher

"This book brings together the latest developments in this new research area. Written for graduate students, as well as for researchers and practicing engineers working with composite materials, this book presents state-of-the-art knowledge on impact dynamics, yet requires only basic understanding of the mechanics of composite materials." Medical Equipment Designer, DesignFax

"The author, who developed his reputation in the field of impact of composite structures through his review papers, is one of the few individuals qualified to write a book of this nature. It represents excellent coverage of pertinent areas...nicely describes the overall problems related to structural impact." AIAA Journal

"...succeeds as a 'state of the art' text...a valuable contribution..The book is very nicely presented and reads well. I recommend this book to civil, structural, aerospace, naval, architectural and automobile engineers who may perform jobs on structures built with composite materials." The Structural Engineer

"...well written and is easy to read for those with some knowledge of impact dynamics and a basic understanding of composite materials...Overall the book is a useful addition to the literature and should provide a good source of reference both for research workers and practising engineers. The book gives value for money for the specialist." Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers
