Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Riad Barmada, MD(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This book is dedicated to the method of impaction bone grafting and its use in revision arthroplasties of total hip and total knees when significant bone loss is encountered.
Purpose: The purpose is to describe a method to restore bone stock during revision of total joints replacement with prosthetic loosening and severe osteolysis.
Audience: Orthopedic surgeons are the intended audience.
Features: The authors start with a historical review of bone graft, followed by methods of harvesting, preserving, and banking practices of bone grafts. Then mechanical and biological aspects of bone grafting is discussed. The remaining chapters are reserved for a discussion of the method of impaction bone grafting and detailed operative techniques of harvesting, preserving, and application of this type of bone grafts in revision surgery of failed total hip and total knee surgeries.
Assessment: This book is focused on the description of one technique for addressing bone loss encountered in joint replacement revision surgery, mainly impaction bone grafting. It is a very important issue, but highly specialized one and concerns orthopedic surgeons who are involved in a busy total joint revision practice.
