Beautiful

As a newbie to the field of serious art history, this book did a good job with its overview of Impressionism. The painting selections were brilliant, covering the basics and then delving deeper to clarify certain ideals and aspirations of the painters. I may just be used to reading purely historical (as opposed to art historical) texts, but the book kind of glossed over the historical era, mentioning events that would surely have influenced artists, but never quite pulling it all together. For example, the Paris Commune is mentioned quite frequently as an historical bookmark, but you never really get the sense of how divisive it was for society, and how that would have effected creativity. I would have enjoyed a deeper look at the various groups the artists formed for themselves. However, the book does lend a coherent sense of the painters as people and of their creative processes.

I really enjoyed reading this, and appreciated that the author took care to exclude too many footnotes. I will also be making use of the bibliography. The author is a clear writer, and has a talent for taking even a novice into the depths of art historical terminology.
