Dimock makes many interesting observations on the people, fauna, and culture of Cuba, but perhaps more revealing are the racist and jingoistic attitudes he reveals when arguing that the United States could make Cuba a vibrant, rich economy instead of the disaster he felt the Spanish and Cubans had made of it.--Library Journal

Then 32 years old, Boston mercantile Dimock, spent two months in Cuba early in 1859 to help with business transactions by his wife's relatives, who owned sugar companies there. He observed agriculture; plant life; natural resources; details of the sugar industry; the daily life of slaves, Spaniards, and Cubans; transportation; housing; and culture.
