Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Then 32 years old, Boston mercantile Dimock, spent two months in Cuba early in 1859 to help with business transactions by his wife's relatives, who owned sugar companies there. He observed agriculture; plant life; natural resources; details of the sugar industry; the daily life of slaves, Spaniards, and Cubans; transportation; housing; and culture. He travelled around the Caribbean island and visited prisons, salons, and other unusual places. A bibliographic essay describes other narratives. No index. Paper edition (unseen), $16.95. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
John M. Kirk
