Overview

American versus Englishman—will it be a war of wits, or a battle to find their hearts? Alix hasn’t had much luck in her life, but a trip to London, a matchmaking landlady, and the handsome Scotland Yard detective living above her indicate her luck is about to change. Has she truly found her perfect man, or will the disasters that dog her steps destroy everything she’s hoped for?

Alexandra Freemar should be in heaven—she’s just been handed everything she’s ever wanted on a silver plate: a three month stay in London, the time to write the book of her heart, and the chance to finally prove to her mother that she’s not the miserable failure her past indicates. Free-spirited, unconventional, and able to find the absurd in almost any situation, Alix finds that heaven isn’t what it’s cracked up to be when fate, in the form of a matchmaking landlady who promises to fix her up with her perfect soul mate, hands her the devilishly handsome man who lives upstairs. Her perfect man? Hardly! Her perfect man is not a workaholic, straight-laced detective inspector from Scotland Yard who wouldn’t recognize fun if it bit him on his (extremely attractive) behind.

Alexander Black is a man with a mission, and no one is going to distract him from that, not even the uninhibited, carefree American who personifies everything he dislikes in a woman: she belittles his devotion to work, insists on dragging him into the most unlikely of situations, exudes sexuality that makes his mouth go dry whenever he’s near her, and teases him with a brashness that’s utterly foreign to him. But underneath that sassy mouth and devil-may-care exterior, he senses a wounded woman who’s calling out to him, and try as he might, he just can’t refuse answering.

Meet the Author

For as long as she can remember, Katie MacAlister has loved reading. Growing up in a family where a weekly visit to the library was a given, Katie spent much of her time with her nose buried in a book. Despite her love for novels, she didn’t think of writing them until she was contracted to write a non-fiction book about software. Since her editor refused to allow her to include either witty dialogue or love scenes in the software book, Katie swiftly resolved to switch to fiction, where she could indulge in world building, tormenting characters, and falling madly in love with all her heroes.

Two years after she started writing novels, Katie sold her first romance, Noble Intentions. More than thirty books later, her novels have been translated into numerous languages, been recorded as audiobooks, received several awards, and are regulars on the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. She also writes for the young adult audience as Katie Maxwell.

Katie lives in the Pacific Northwest with her beloved dogs, and can often be found lurking around online.

    Hilariously funny, witty and romantic!

I never would have bought this book had I believed all the bad reviews I've seen thus far. All I can say is that they are all WRONG! Don't judge a book by all the bad reviews, in my time I've found that what some may think as a bad book, movie or play & are not worth ones time or money, are usually people that are impossible to find anything to their liking and impossible standards! I for one LOVED this book and couldn't put it down. I have four boys ranging from 14, 11, 9 and 7 years old and they found it amusing that mom was laughing her head off at the most un-opportune times. They told me that I should Katie MacAlister books more often because mom is always laughing and happy! Well it's true and so are my thoughts on this book. Katie managed to make her characters as close to real life as is humanly possible . They are witty, funny, romantic ,mad, sad, depressed... get the picture? They're REAL people and I have to applaud Katie on another successfully hilariously PERFECT book! So if you want to add a little laughter, spice and romance in your day to day hum-drum lives- READ 'IMPROPER ENGLISH'!

    Painful

I'm a fan of Katie MacAlister. I adore her vampire and dragon series, but this made me want to swear off reading any if not all non-paranormal books. I used to be a firm believer in judging a book by it's cover(if it has a good cover then it has to be good), but I have finally learned my lesson.

The main character made me want to maim myself to have something less painful to do. I know, why not stop reading it and get something pleasant to read? I foolishly thought she was going to get better(it didn't).

Please, save yourself the heartache of a painfully selfish, horribly annoying main character and pick up a different book. Worse $8 spent in my life.

    Give This One A Pass

I read just about everything. EVERYTHING! This? I couldn't finish. Which was really surprising to me, because i have read other books by this author that I have enjoyed. She isn't the best, by any means, but entertaining and enjoyable. This flop was a shock.

    don't buy

Boring, predictable and the heroine is really lame. Don't give up on this author. She does have some good books out there. But, the majority of them are best kept on the bookshelf at the bookstore.

    Leading Lady a Disappointment

I've read and enjoyed many of her books, but I was quite disappointed in this one. For most of the book, the main character is a self-centered cry-baby. She gets peeved at the man (who loves her) because he's out trying to save someone in a hostage situation instead of consoling her when she is told the book she's writing is horrible (which is the truth). I had a hard time rooting for her and the relationship since her actions made her seem so shallow and unworthy.

    Terrible

I borrowed this book from a friend, thinking it would be cute, if not great. I wasn't expecting much, but it ended up being one of the worst romance novels that I have ever read. I absolutely hated it. It didn't make sense, I couldn't follow the plot and it was just plain bad!

    Dissapointing

I bought this book on a whim, hoping that it would be charming, clever, and witty. I instead found it, and especially the main character Alix to be tedious and annoying. There were a few sharp and funny parts, but these were drowned out by the bulk of the book and the characters within. I would not reommend this book to anyone.

I love every character in this book except the heroine. I understand Ms. MacAlister's appreciation for imperfect characters but good heavens. Alix did not have 1 redeeming quality until the last 10 pages of the book. Please enjoy Ms. MacAlister's other works and use this book to start a fire in your fireplace. Improper indeed.

    I Also Recommend:

Was not able to stop laughing the whole way through!

I've read hundreds of romance novels and this book was the funniest by far! Alix is a bit to outrageous. There were points when I wanted to strangle her when interacting with Alex; however, I had no choice but to fall in love with her. She just blows into any situation and either makes you want to laugh so hard you'll pee your pants, or yell with frustration. This book is a must read for anyone who has had "One of Those Days" and needs a laugh.

    Laughing

I love Katie MacAlister books. I know that I will always be laughing. I'm not really a straight romance kind of girl...I tend to like some mystery or suspense with my romance. However, I always find Katie's contemporary romances fun to read.

    Hilariously Romantic

I enjoyed this book very much. Could not stop laughing out loud. My husband wanted to know what the book was about because I was smiling through the whole book. It is also sexy and romantic. My first Katie MacAlister book but it won't be my last.

    A very engaging read.

I just finished this book and it is definitely worth your time. There were countless times when I wanted to shake Alix, the main character, or covering my eyes in horror of what had just happened. It was very funny however, the plot does drag in certain parts. Besides that, it was very good.

    Witty, funny, and overall pleasing

This book is a great romantic comedy. If you are like me and don't read books for hidden meanings or for an experience that will change your life (I got enough of that in college), then this book is for you. It is a great book to read to just have some fun! There are laugh-out-loud parts as well as some parts that you can really identify with, if you have ever learned that family and past relationships can taint a good thing. It is a great read if you want something that is not too serious and if you want qutie a few laughs. Overall, I gave it 4 out of 5 stars.

    Don't Bother

This book was flat and insipid. I had heard good things about MacAlister and was eager to read this. I was trapped on a six hour flight with a heroine who needs to grow up, shape up and develop some personality. Sorry I wasted my time.

    YUCK

I am a really big book person. I read constantly. With this book, I never got past page 2. The introduction needs help severely because it was disgusting. I would never recommend this book to anyone.
