Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
For anyone looking for project ideas for the fall season, Gillis has several good ones. She offers tips on planting pumpkins (a spring activity) and then moves to harvesting them (a fall activity). Interspersed are lots of facts and pumpkin lore. Pilgrims ate plenty of pumpkins and even made beer out of them. The largest known pumpkin weighed 821 pounds--enough to make 400 pumpkin pies. Kids can have fun painting pumpkin faces, creating pumpkin centerpieces, and making jack-o-lanterns. There are recipes for soup, waffles, pie, rolls, cookies and bread--all made from pumpkins. This book would be useful in elementary school classrooms and for homeschoolers. The projects use items easily obtained and they are fun. The cover is full-color while the illustrations and text are rendered in orange and green. 1999 (orig. 1992), Storey Publishing, Ages 6 up, $17.95 and $9.95. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot—Children's Literature

Gr 3-6-- This entertaining book on a sure-to-be-popular subject is divided into three sections: for the gardener, the artist, and the cook. Included are many projects and recipes, from growing a giant pumpkin to making painted pumpkin seed necklaces, seed tambourines, yeast rolls, fried pumpkin blossoms, and, of course, plain roasted seeds. Sprinkled throughout are bits of pilgrim lore. The brief but helpful tips on gardening will increase understanding. Cheerful, homey (if somewhat hokey) orange-and-green ink drawings are decorative rather than informative. A smiling boy, girl, or pumpkin decorates almost every page. Occasionally the text is vague, e.g., readers are told to put rising dough ``in a nice, warm place.'' That minor flaw will not stop children from enjoying the ideas, inviting layout, and breezy style. --Sharon Levin, University of Vermont, Burlington
