Overview

In seven recording sessions spaced over a year and a half's time, Charlie Parker changed the face of jazz forever. The sessions he recorded between March of 1946 into December of the following year for the Los Angeles based Dial Record label set the pace for the new bebop style, with every solo that emerged from Bird's horn being taken apart by every horn man like a fine watch. Dipping into the well spring of sides that Bird stockpiled for the label and choosing the takes that find him in a reflective spirit, this compilation goes a long way to be a nice bebop novice primer as well. Parker's work on "Loverman," "Ornithology," "Yardbird Suite," "Scrapple From The Apple," and "Relaxin' At Camarillo" are the sides that truly set the pace in the evolution of the new style, while his ballad playing on "All The Things You Are," "Out Of Nowhere," "My Old Flame," and "Embraceable You" is nothing short of breathtaking. The personnel on any of these tracks is truly a who's who of jazz, with Miles Davis, Dodo Marmarosa, Howard McGhee, Errol Garner, Barney Kessel, Max Roach, Wardell Gray, and J.J. Johnson all contributing mightily on various sides to making these Bird's most fully realized studio recordings. Although these tracks have been reissued exhaustively ad infinitum where every note blown and every take has been put under the jazz microscope, this compilation makes great listening and, with 18 tracks and a 56 minute running time, a budget priced disc that offers astounding value as well.
