Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up-Contemplating the connectivity of the universe, atoms, physics, and other scientific wonders is heady stuff. Add human beings and their biology, philosophies, foibles, successes, ecology, and ethics (or lack of) to the mix, and the result is this oddly titled yet thought-provoking guide. Carlson delves into the mysteries of Earth and outer and inner space in an approachable way, though there are occasional lapses into personal philosophies and the tone is sometimes preachy. Black-and-white drawings are informational and often humorous, which adds appeal, as does the quirky cover of a teen dressed as a cave man, playing guitar and crooning to the cosmos. A glossary and bibliography round out the book, although specific documentation from magazines and other resources is lacking. Barry E. Zimmerman and David J. Zimmerman's Why Nothing Can Travel Faster Than Light-and Other Explorations in Nature's Curiosity Shop (Contemporary, 1993) covers some of the same plus additional topics, though it is not current enough to cover subjects such as recent cloning and its implications. Teens with an affinity for science and its workings will enjoy pondering the facts and ideas presented here.-Diane P. Tuccillo, City of Mesa Library, AZ Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
