Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
America's first Children's Poet Laureate has done it again. For years, Prelutsky has been creating poetry that delights both children and adults. Who has not been tickled by Scranimals, The Frog Wore Red Suspenders, or My Dog May Be a Genius? With his mastery of language, Prelutsky evokes humor and silliness that makes everyone giggle and laugh. Here, the opening poem acquaints us with Aunt Giraffe's especially tall garden flowers. This volume also provides poems set in many places throughout the United States. Readers encounter Ida ice fishing in Bemidji, Minnesota; Jolly Jane trapping lobsters in Maine; a seagull visiting Baltimore, Maryland; and children, after a May snowstorm in Billings, Montana, building a snowman wearing sunglasses. Yet another poem describes a Mexican man whose magical drawings of creatures come alive to do such nonsensical things as play a piccolo. Watercolor illustrations blend flawlessly with the word images to ensure that everyone will savor the book, whether they enjoy it as a storytime selection or as a read-alone experience. Consider this for the first purchase list. Reviewer: Sylvia Firth

    A garden of delights

My great niece loves her toy giraffe. This book presents the perfect story to settle her down for her nap. There are other animal stories vivid in color and imagination.

    Sort of fun

The poems though sweet, did not engage the three year I was reading to at the time. I was somewhat dissappointed. I did like the illustrations and was able to interact with those. It was the title of the book that peaked my interest.
