Can we overcome our past?
Katie Parker is about to get a new life—whether she wants one or not. With her mom in prison, and her father AWOL, Katie is sent to live with a squeaky-clean family who could have their own sitcom. She launches a full-scale plan to get sent back to the girls’ home when she finds herself in over her head...and heart. When Katie and her new "wrong crowd" get into significant trouble at school, she finds her punishment is restoring a historic theater with a crazy grandma who goes by the name of Mad Maxine. In the midst of her punishment, Katie uncovers family secrets that run deep, and realizes she's not the only one with a pain-filled past. Katie must decide if she'll continue her own family’s messed up legacy or embrace a new beginning in this place called In Between.

When I started this almost 300 page novel, I did not think I would like it very much. It had several strikes against it, right from the first page. It is first person and written rather like a journal. It is about a foster child with a chip on her shoulder and it could be a YA book. Did you notice, I wrote " COULD BE?" It is very well edited and is a Christian book. At times it gets a little preachy, but since the foster parents are the preacher and mainstay of the town and church, it seems right. This is a coming of age book for a girl who gets in with the wrong crowd and makes some bad decisions. It has a few very mild adult topics, again appropiate for a book about a Jr. Sr. In high school. I liked this book very much. It could be considered YA, but it is so well done and realistic, almost anyone will enjoy this clean, engrossing, entertaining read. Love and patience can make a difference in the lives of others. I wish there was a sequal for this free standing book. AD

Gave the story 3 stars. Main character could be real...in her thoughts, feelings and sense of humor, she was quite likeable. This story could be a biography of thousands in the real world or perhaps it was? Enjoyed the writers style and liked the book overall.

This is the first book I have read by this author, it will not be the last! It caught me from the first chapter and kept me wanting more. I love the characters of this book and the message in the story. I love the quick, sassy wit of the main character, the foster grandmother, the foster parents and the rest of the supporting characters. I can't say enough good about this book. I haven't read a book I have enjoyed this much in a long time! Can't wait to read another one by this author!

I've never felt quite this way about a book before. The story idea was good. The characters were funny, quirky, and realistic. There was no reason to not like this book. Except. When I put it down, I couldn't seem to find a reason to pick it back up. I am not a quitter of books, so when I start a book I always finish it (except for 2 books ever). However, this was a 252 page book and it took me over two weeks to read it. The book I read before this one was about the same size, and I finished it in three days. I don't understand my reaction to this book, as I think it is a good book. But I also don't feel compelled to read any more books in this series and I felt relieved when I finished reading the last page. Weird.

What a wonderfully refreshing read to start a new year with! I loved the homespun, reality in Katie's character. I am forty-three but I fit perfectly into Katie's shoes...LOL! I am currently raising two teenagers and during some of Katie's 'feeling moments' I found myself seeing life through their eyes. I completely loved how the author portrays God and His amazing way of reaching through the rotten and dark times of life to touch a soul with His Love Light! My heart's cry in this new year is that our Youth would find us Adult Christians, truly faithful to love and help them through to God like In Between's Christians did!

Jones is a hard author to let her books sit unfinished. The characters are lovable. The scenarios are real and interesting. There's humor and wit, real emotions, and a home-hitting message of making wise choices in friendship, being accepting and forgiving toward people who are showing they want to change, and people can surprise you. I have already recommended this to my girls in youth group. :)
