All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
Bursting with island grooves, passionate vocals, and tasteful instrumentation, In Between Now and Then is the musical equivalent of every friendly hippie you've ever met. It's accommodating and full of entertaining stories, and will get even the sourest of pusses on the dancefloor. Released just in time for summer break, the LP is such a rousing, good-timing affair, it might as well open the fridge and grab a beer for you.
This is exactly the kind of musical hospitality O.A.R. has been providing since it first emerged on the college jam band scene in the late '90s. Building a reputation through energetic live gigs and a strong Internet file-sharing presence, the band finally opted for a jump to the big leagues, no doubt encouraged by the success of rootsy types like John Mayer. But unlike Mayer, who too often suggests a younger Dave Matthews, O.A.R. -- Marc Roberge vocals/guitar, Jerry DePizzo saxophone, Richard On guitar, Chris Culos drums, and Benj Gershman bass -- is more akin to the uplifting folk-pop of Guster or David Gray, albeit with a substantial debt to Bob Marley. Helmed by longtime O.A.R. collaborator John AlagĂa, In Between Now and Then wisely stays close to what the band does best, and doesn't worry about trying to impress new listeners with bells and whistles. Instead, it's sort of like an invitation for the rest of the world to join the party O.A.R. has been playing for its fans all these years. From the insistent reggae breeze of "Dareh Meyod" and irresistibly peppy "Risen" sample lyric: "I never knew life could taste so good!" to the gentle jamming of ballad "James," In Between ambles through 13 tracks with the comfort and ease of a countryside bike ride. O.A.R. veterans will recognize first single "Hey Girl" as a holdover from the band's early days; it appears here in re-recorded form. Elsewhere, the band dabbles in free jamming "Anyway," "Whose Chariot?", but never does so in such an obtuse way as to alienate the casual backyard fan. In Between Now and Then is sure to have O.A.R.'s old fans -- of which there are many -- playing Frisbee with its soon-to-be-numerous new ones.

    Friggin Awsome

All i have to say is that i love this band and all the music they produce.. If they keep it up they will always have my support as a fan. I just have to point out one thing about this band. That is ya know how some cds you will buy and listen to and you won't like one of the songs and every time that song comes up you always skip it. Well this cd is one that you can just play all the way through. Every single song is great!!!!

At first I didn't like it because it was differant, but I listened to it a few times and became obsessed.

At first I didn't like it because it was differant, but I listened to it a few times and became obsessed. I might be deprived, but I;ve been to 4 concerts in my life. Two of them this past summer to see O.A.R. Needless to say, I'm obsessed. Their music has a strange power that makes me feel good no matter how upset of angry I might be. I get chills when I hear the live tracks, beacuse they remind me of how incredable they are in concert. The ONLY thing that I don't like about them in concert is, when They play some new songs I dont know the words. As far as In between now and then goes, The best so far... I'm straight and all but i love these guys! By far my favorite band. They send a good strong message about; life, love, happiness, tragety... you just need to listen and you will be addicted

    Buy This!

This CD is awesome. If you like the not-so-popular music of Dispatch, Guster, Jack, etc, this will be a great addition to your collection.

    Fill Up The Void

After listening to O.A.R. for the last two years, thanks to a dear friend, she was kind enough to give me this CD/DVD as a B-Day gift. The limited CD/DVD release allows the uninitiated to "see" as well as hear what all the fuss is about. I was so excited to "see" the band that I forgot to listen to the CD (…that came later). As any follower of O.A.R. already knows, they are renown for their live shows and the DVD recordings clearly showed me what I was missing. O.A.R.’s music breathes and flows and all the musicians REALLY play their instruments...how's that for talent? In Between Now And Then shows that they have become rock solid performers in the studio, too. Even though they wear their influences on their sleeves, they somehow lend a freedom to the song style they created almost single-handedly. Merging an interesting amalgam of rock and pop with a twist of reggae for flavor, O.A.R. have stepped up to the plate and delivered another interesting stop along the path they've asked us to follow ever since releasing The Wanderer in 1997. Although the CD contains a previously released song (Hey Girl), it is hardly considered a detriment. O.A.R. is NOT about the current rave or latest Top-40 treat, but ALL about the groove. They have found it and they're doing their darndest to make sure we get it, too. Keep it up boys!!

O.A.R. absolutely rocks! They have an amazing sound combination with great vocals. They are a great band, and also great people. Makes you feel good

This album never fails to bring a person up. In Between Now and Then is such a good mix of music and moods that it never gets old. Beautiful, rich music that is heard in every song - not just Hey Girl.

    Great Live Band!

Awesome CD! So are the rest of the O.A.R. collection. I think this band is one of the best kept secrets in music today. They have a great fan base that makes live shows amazing! I recommend this CD

    Strong album

I really like the added DVD bonus! The album itself took a little time to warm-up to. It has different sound than the previous albums (Risen and The Wanderer are my favorites). That being said, it's not a bad sound at all. After listening to it a few times, I now love it. It's just a bit different than previous work.

    Awesome CD

O.A.R. is an amazing band and this new cd is awesome. James and Dareh Meyod and great songs along with Anyways and all the rest. This is a more main stream sound for them but it is still a great cd that I listen to over and over

This is the music to plan your day to

If i had to give this album a one word rating, i could only use one word to sum it up. "impressive". This album has impressed me in ways that i never knew music could. I have always been an avid OAR fan, and this album made me realize why. From the very begining of the soul filled Dareh Meyod, all the way to the catchy Whose Chariot?, This album has the listeners attention all the way through. This album will have your toes tapping and your head bobbing. I recommend this album to anyone who appreciates music, for all the people who dont appreciate music, and all the people in between. This album is worth the money.
