Barnes & Noble - David Sprague
After years of grassroots success, this Columbus, Ohio–based jam aggregation have followed kindred spirit Dave Matthews into the major-label ranks -- with little evidence of change in the band's trademark rhythm-intensive sound. Also known as Of a Revolution, the group refer to their particular niche as "island-vibe roots-rock," an appropriately feel-good descriptor of such reggae-saturated tunes as the dubwise opener, "Now," and the shuffling "Dareh Meyod," which spotlights an infectiously rubbery lead bass line from Benj Gershman.
In Between Now and Then contains some of the band's catchiest material to date -- the sax-laced "Right on Time" fits top-down highway cruising as perfectly as the Steve Miller Band did a generation ago -- but not at the expense of O.A.R.'s more far-reaching forays, well represented by the alternately droning and driving "Anyway." Frontman Marc Roberge has a tendency to mope a little more than he oughta, which infects the rest of the band on the sullen "Mr. Moon," but when fellow guitarist Richard On pushes him a little more, as on the textured, jazz-tinged "Road Outside Columbus," Roberge settles into a propulsive groove. In Between Now and Then probably won't foment any major upheavals -- as the band's name would suggest -- but it's the perfect accompaniment to more measured psychic shifts.
All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
Bursting with island grooves, passionate vocals, and tasteful instrumentation, In Between Now and Then is the musical equivalent of every friendly hippie you've ever met. It's accommodating and full of entertaining stories, and will get even the sourest of pusses on the dancefloor. Released just in time for summer break, the LP is such a rousing, good-timing affair, it might as well open the fridge and grab a beer for you. This is exactly the kind of musical hospitality O.A.R. has been providing since it first emerged on the college jam band scene in the late '90s. Building a reputation through energetic live gigs and a strong Internet file-sharing presence, the band finally opted for a jump to the big leagues, no doubt encouraged by the success of rootsy types like John Mayer. But unlike Mayer, who too often suggests a younger Dave Matthews, O.A.R. -- Marc Roberge vocals/guitar, Jerry DePizzo saxophone, Richard On guitar, Chris Culos drums, and Benj Gershman bass -- is more akin to the uplifting folk-pop of Guster or David Gray, albeit with a substantial debt to Bob Marley. Helmed by longtime O.A.R. collaborator John Alagía, In Between Now and Then wisely stays close to what the band does best, and doesn't worry about trying to impress new listeners with bells and whistles. Instead, it's sort of like an invitation for the rest of the world to join the party O.A.R. has been playing for its fans all these years. From the insistent reggae breeze of "Dareh Meyod" and irresistibly peppy "Risen" sample lyric: "I never knew life could taste so good!" to the gentle jamming of ballad "James," In Between ambles through 13 tracks with the comfort and ease of a countryside bike ride. O.A.R. veterans will recognize first single "Hey Girl" as a holdover from the band's early days; it appears here in re-recorded form. Elsewhere, the band dabbles in free jamming "Anyway"; "Whose Chariot?", but never does so in such an obtuse way as to alienate the casual backyard fan. In Between Now and Then is sure to have O.A.R.'s old fans -- of which there are many -- playing Frisbee with its soon-to-be-numerous new ones. [The limited edition of In Between Now and Then includes a DVD featuring three live tracks captured at New York's Irving Plaza in Winter 2002: crowd favorite "That Was a Crazy Game of Poker," "Risen," and "Revisited" from the new album.]

    I want my money back

If you like your music devoid of artistry and emotionless, then look no further - this is the cd for you. If, however, you prefer a little groove or some representation of what a band does live ... then avoid this cd at all costs. I am pissed that I could not return it for a refund. And I like this band generally, or I do in concert at least. They haven't made a decent cd yet in my humble opinion.

    It's a great album.

This album was recommended to me by two friends. I was doubtful at first on whether or not I should buy the album, but now that I have it, I have no regrets. It's a great CD.

This is what we waited for???

I am not a muscian, so maybe I just don't get it, but I have been to over a dozen shows of this band and I like their music alot. However, this disk like all their others with the exception of "Any time now" is sterile as hell. Is it that hard to capture some soul in the studio? I have several live shows of these guys that I have downloaded from their tapers board, and they all rock - but every studio album they have done to date sounds like a bunch of robots. The drums have no life, the vocals sound like Celine Dion, and the songs don't groove. It's almost like they purposely take the best parts out of their live songs, and then record them for my mom. I will continue to see these guys live, but won't I buy anymore of their cd's. If I wanted to hear 80's music - I would listen to my parent's cd's.

    A Fresh Sound for All

The new CD from O.A.R.(pronounced oh-eh-are)shows how a college band from Ohio State can relate to the mainstream with just a little time for maturity and insight into human emotions. The unique voice of lead singer Marc Roberge coupled with the soothing sax of Jerry DePizzio, the punch from drummer Chris Culos and bassist Benj Gershman, and the groove of Richard On's Stratocaster is a powerful combination that can touch anyone. For pure emotion, try James and Mr. Moon. And for more relaxed top down cruising, try Right On Time, Road Outside Columbus, and Hey Girl. This is definitely an album not to be missed by any music lover.
