Cassandra Giovanni is an avid writer of young adult novels and can't wait to share her work with you. The genres of her novels include dystopian, paranormal, mystery and romance all aimed at appealing to adults and young adults alike. Her personal goal with her writing is to show the reader the character's stories through their dialogue and actions instead of just telling the reader what is happening. She began writing at a very young age, in fact from the moment she could draw she was telling stories that way. At age seven she won a contest in American Girl Doll to have a chapter she had written published. From that point on she was always writing, if not on paper than in her head. In May 2012 she published her first novel, In Between Seasons, which demonstrated her unique writing style and approach to the genre of post-apocalyptic fiction. On Halloween 2012 Cassandra released her second novel, Walking in the Shadows. This novel puts a new twist on the obsession of vampires in literature and explores some of the darkest parts of human nature, while still showing that there is always hope--if we only choose to believe in ourselves.

3.25 stars-- IN BETWEEN SEASONS is the first instalment in Cassandra Giovanni’s YA, dystopian The Fall post-apocalyptic series focusing on the hunter/gatherer tribal communities formed after the collapse of the government and the political parties known as The Fall. This is twenty five year old Hunter Marks and eighteen year old Kate Ericson’s story-a Romeo and Juliet style YA romance. Told from first person POV (Kate) the storyline follows the lies, reality and truth behind the world, as it is, years after the collapse of the government. Kate’s father is a tribal chief and his word is law. The only problem is that Kate questions everything that is taught and heard. But the day Kate finds herself the victim of a kidnapping by another tribe she will quickly learn that everything she has been taught –is a lie-and more. The relationship between Kate and Hunter is one of immediate attraction. Hunter has been sent to kill Kate but something about Kate’s willingness to escape with her captor finds Hunter enthralled with the young woman whose father is a sworn enemy of his tribe. As the storyline builds, so too does Kate and Hunter’s relationship-one that is forbidden. Kate becomes a POW but her relationship with Hunter is anything but captor and prisoner. IN BETWEEN SEASONS is a sociological study of tribal communities consisting of patriarchal societies controlled by the men. The term hunter/gatherer society has more of a war-like connotation when the hunters are those who seek out and destroy, and the gatherers are sent to acquire information. While the woman must remain within the community-cooking, cleaning and preparing the meals-the men train for battle knowing that most will never return. Overall, IN BETWEEN SEASONS is an interesting storyline and the premise is one that could very well happen at some point in time. But saying that, there is quite a bit of background information missing from the story: What happened to cause The Fall? What exactly was The Fall? What was life like before The Fall? How did everyone come to live together in tribal societies? Character development is lacking as well. There is very little background information about the people or the main characters –what we know and learn commences at the start of the story-several years after The Fall. I would have liked some history about the people and places, and it is never revealed where the storyline takes place. Perhaps Cassandra has a prequel novel in the works that will answer many of the questions that left me lost and confused.
