Overview

The Corrs -- three sisters and a brother from Ireland -- have taken the world by storm, ascending international pop chart after international pop chart on the strength of their beautifully sculpted songs and matching cheekbones. The videogenic band's layered vocal melodies and well-placed Celtic flavors meld folk-pop traditions while embracing the fresh sound of postmillennial radio. The peppy standout track "Radio" -- one of a handful produced by legendary rock producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange (a.k.a. Mr. Shania Twain) -- arrives ready to take over the airwaves with a resounding chorus, edgy guitar line, and crisp, electronic-edged production. Still, the Corrs sneak in a brief violin refrain -- a proudly worn badge of their heritage. Other traditional flourishes color In Blue -- Sharon Corr's violin, Caroline Corr's bodhran, and lead singer Andrea Corr's tin whistle -- but only when the melodies allow room for it. Songs such as the defiant "Give Me a Reason," the lilting "Somebody for Someone," and the soft-rock ballad "All the Love in the World" use the subtle, graceful strains of these lovely instruments without throwing their finely calibrated pop songs out of whack.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Steven McDonald
A very straightforward release from the Corrs, who spend the majority of this outing in full-blown pop mode, with the Celtic elements mostly being relegated to the backgrounds of several songs. The one exception is the closing instrumental, "Rebel Heart," which stirs itself up full-bloodily to provide the album with an anthem. In Blue is a bright, peppy set that bears more than a few comparisons to the work of bands such as the Bangles and Fanny, though the Corrs have an additional advantage in that Caroline Corr is an impressively muscular drummer. The CD includes a HyperCD section with a video for "Breathless" and various web links.
