In Beating the Odds Clark guides readers through a systematic plan for starting or improving a business. Using a logical ten-step plan called ``microgenesis,'' he brings together key resources--information from reference books and workshops--an entrepreneur can use to build a successful business. Clark focuses on the three most common failures of a small business: inadequate financing, poor management, and ineffective marketing techniques. Clark puts into context the use of both the marketing and business plans with examples and exercises. A recommended reading list includes works by Warren Bennis, David Gumpert, Tom Peters, and other classic authors on small business and leadership. By comparison, In Business for Yourself discusses the ins and outs of running a small business. In a chatty, conversational style, Williams focuses on the skills and attitudes a small business owner requires rather than on specific ``how-to'' advice. Especially interesting is his discussion on professional relationships with business associates such as bankers, lawyers, accountants, and employees, as well as family and friends. The personal help one can get from these individuals is often downplayed or not mentioned in small business texts.
