All Music Guide - Bret Adams
Cinderella was always one of the most musically substantive 1980s "hair metal" bands. A flamboyant image helped get vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist/songwriter Tom Keifer truly an underrated overall talent, but he likely rubbed high-brow critics the wrong way with his gravel-in-a-blender voice, guitarist Jeff LaBar, bass guitarist Eric Brittingham, and drummer Fred Coury on MTV, but it was the strong songs that kept the band in the commercial spotlight longer than most of their peers once grunge/alternative struck by late 1991. Cinderella's third album, 1990's Heartbreak Station, dug deeper into the blues-oriented Rolling Stones and Aerosmith influences and displayed a forward leap by looking to the past for inspiration. Heartbreak Station ranks as one of the last platinum-selling hurrahs of the entire era. With that in mind, the 2005 DVD In Concert is a fitting companion piece. It was filmed in Detroit on the Heartbreak Station tour in 1991, when this kind of rock & roll was still a major arena draw. In Concert is a lot of fun, mostly because of the quality meat on the songs' bones. Keifer, LaBar, Brittingham, and Coury are assisted by a keyboardist, saxophonist, and two female background vocalists. Heartbreak Station highlights include "The More Things Change," "Sick for the Cure," "Make Your Own Way," "Heartbreak Station," and "Love's Got Me Doin' Time." The Night Songs and Long Cold Winter favorites "Night Songs," "Somebody Save Me," "Coming Home," "Don't Know What You Got Til It's Gone," "Nobody's Fool," "Gypsy Road," and "Shake Me" dependably generate racing pulses, pumping fists, and buckets of sweat. "Shelter Me," a Top 40 hit from Heartbreak Station, is the final encore, not an early band classic. Live and behind-the-scenes photos are included as a bonus feature. In Concert has a few minor tics in terms of direction and editing, but it will certainly please Cinderella fans. It's also a valuable time capsule preserving one of the genre's best bands in its prime.
