In Concertby The Beach Boys
Originally a double LP now collected on a single CD, The Beach Boys in Concert is an energetic and eclectic set that demonstrates what a solid live act the group had become by the early 1970s, making their subsequent devolution into by-the-numbers human jukebox all the more sadder. The album is also a fine document of how well the band -- which had expanded to include guitarist Blondie Chaplin and drummer Rikki Fataar -- had adapted to Brian Wilson's absence from the touring lineup, and how his talented brother Carl had deftly stepped up to become the band's de facto leader. Carl's consistently gorgeous vocals are In Concert's most salient quality, and it's interesting to hear him stand in for his absent brother on the Pet Sounds classics "Sloop John B.," "Caroline No," and "You Still Believe in Me."
