Editorial Reviews

Jacqueline Johnson
In Daddy's Arms I Am Tall is a delightful collage poetry and mixed media...the poetry is rich and varied, celebrating with humor and style the lives of children and their fathers....[The poetry] lends power and meaning to the images and is reason enough to include this book in one's library. In Daddy's Arms I Am Tall is a must see and read for both young readers and their parents. -- Quarterly Black Review
Children's Literature
These short poems are accompanied by a variety of illustrations created by Javaka Steptoe, son of the late well-known children's illustrator. It's a celebration of father, and African-American fathers in particular. Steptoe opens with an Ashanti proverb "When you follow in the path of your father, you learn to walk like him." and closes with "My Father's Eyes" by Sonia Sanchez. Steptoe's first illustration is a striking collage that incorporates mixed media and has a 3D effect, with a young boy trying to place his feet into the giant footprints. The artwork for the last poem occupies both pages and in actual size is ten feet long and five feet high. Brief introductions to the poets and a note about the artwork are found on the last page. Winner of the 1997 Coretta Scott King picture book award.
Children's Literature
The driving raw energy of words and pictures may come from Steptoe's early loss of his father, famous children's book writer-illustrator, John Steptoe. In his poem "Seeds", he writes " You drew pictures of life / with your words. / I listened and ate these words you said / to grow up strong.... For better or worse / the apple doesn't fall far from the tree." Artistically, I'd say his inheritance was for the better; he carries his father's intensity and ability to capture the heart on paper. The book holds only eleven poems, but the range of experience and eloquence makes each exquisite and Steptoe illustrates them elegantly with a preponderance of monochromes and techniques as varied as the poets he chooses. These, by the way, include Raleigh poet, Lenard Moore's powerful "Black Father Man". The book is the winner of the 1998 Coretta Scott King picture book award.
School Library Journal
Gr 3 UpThis innovative, stunningly illustrated picture book celebrates the role of fathers in the African-American experience. The artist illustrates 13 poems with collages made from paper with pastel; appliqu; and a multitude of found objects, including fabric, coins, seashells, buttons, sand, seeds, and leaves. The artwork vibrates with emotion; even the simplest pieces, showing torn-paper figures on a solid background, capture the powerful bond between parent and child. The poems, written by Angela Johnson, Davida Adedjouma, Carole Boston Weatherford, and others, depict fathers working in the fields and in post offices, playing basketball, fishing, tickling, or hugging. Steptoe's own poem, "Seeds," is a tribute to his father: "You drew pictures of life/with your words." Libraries will want this title for Black History Month, National Poetry Month, Father's Day, or anytime a patron asks for a book about fathers. Teachers will find it inspiring in classroom units on poetry, or it can be used in conjunction with David Diaz's work to demonstrate collage techniques in an art class. Whatever its use, this lovely book deserves a place on library shelves.Dawn Amsberry, Oakland Public Library, CA

    Perfect for Father's Day.

I knew this book would be special from the start. There should be a non-stop effort to improve the status of African-American fathers in the community. Hur-ray to this book and all other efforts to better fathers. I feel that every father should get his hands on this book.

    Bravo!!!

This book is much needed in the black community. It was given to me prior to my child being born and it motivated me even more to being a great father. My father was absent in my life, but this book further encourages me to help break the cycle of absent black fathers. I'm currently reading another excellent book which I feel deserves praise, it's called 'Why do I have to be your Nigger? Theories in Niggativity.'

    Praises to the Fathers

The book title is strong yet meaningful. It is pleasant to show love, respect, & acknowledge fathers. This was a gift to my father prior to his death & he loved it dearly. I now hold it dear to me. Great gift for Father' Day. Thankful to see African American fathers recognized in a postive manner as this wonderful book does so well. A must have in the household.
