Overview

Sometimes you get a second chance... Remarriage isn't the happily-ever-after Mibby McManus hoped for. Between conflicting work schedules, a rebellious teenage son, a mother-in-law who can't get enough of the Food Channel, and a cat-in-law bent on destruction, Mibby and her new husband, Larry, never seem to find enough time for each other. Then there's the part Mibby really didn't expect - the constant intrusion of memories. Just when she thinks she's gotten back on track, a phone call from California unsettles ...

Rendezvous
"Mibby and Larry return from their honeymoon to find her house full of family and friends. They knew that Connie would be there as she was keeping house for Mib’s fifteen year old son. Connie is her friend and Larry’s mother. Mibby can’t believe that her house, especially her kitchen, has been completely revamped by Connie. Her son Ky is having a rough time adjusting to having a 'father' again. O’ woe is me is the mantra that Mibby has running through her mind as she realizes that changes are possibly going to be made now that she has married Larry. She knows that her marriage will give them both the companionship and the love they were seeking. Their story is of adjustments and second chances. This is a fast-paced and enjoyable read."
Romantic Times
In this final book of the Garden Gates series, Hill gives a moving and realistic portrayal of a family in the midst of tumultuous change. The situations involving remarriage, a rebellious teen and dealing with in-laws will create an emotional response for many readers. Hill doesn't provide easy solutions, but gives a true-to-life account of the work needed to endure--by focusing on family and trust in God. This book contains enough background to stand alone, but for the full enjoyment, the previous books should be read first.

    Blended Families Bring Blended Blessings

Writing out of my experience as a hospice chaplain Ms. Hill's 'Garden Gates' series concludes just as humorously, honestly and satisfyingly as it started. The main character marries a man who is very different from her late husband. The characters in the story discover life is still full of promise, hope and love even as those promises come in unfamiliar ways different from their past. Couples planning to blend their families with a new marriage will find the humor and true to life conflict reflecting their own journey out of two families into a new family. Ms. Hill's book provides just as much laughter as the classic Henry Fonda/Lucille Ball movie about blending families, 'Yours, Mine and Ours'. However, Ms. Hill's book also provides the hope born out of real life struggle that the movie missed. The Garden Gate series is a must for every home bookshelf.

    more from this reviewer

This is a solid character study

Several years have passed since her spouse died in a biking accident. Mibby Garrett, owner of Perennially Yours Garden Design and mother to fifteen years old Kyle, feels it is time to move on. She accepts the proposal of Larry, who is kind to her teenage son, after they discuss what marriage means to one another. Both feel ready as they know what to expect. After the ceremony, they go off on their honeymoon leaving Kyle with Larry¿s mother Connie.--------------------- However, when they return home to set up housekeeping, neither had anticipated the impact of their marriage on their extended family. Connie not only redid the kitchen, but she is over every moment offering unsolicited advice and being hurt when that advice is ignored. Kyle struggles with no longer being the man of the house as much as having a new father. Others are almost as intrusive leaving the newlyweds to wonder if it was worth it. Mibby asks God to help her by guiding her through the chaotic loving interference of others.--------------- Book three in the Garden gates tales (see LIKE A WATERED GARDEN and ALWAYS GREEN) is a terrific realistic look at second marriages mostly from the perspective of an intelligent, deeply devout caring person. Indirectly by how they behave to the beleaguered Mibby, the audience also sees how Larry, Ky and Connie react. Still this is Mibby¿s tale (and trilogy) as she feels so overwhelmed by the actions and reactions of others she wonders whether living in sin would have been a better option before turning to the Lord for guidance. This is a solid character study miniseries that deeply follows a woman from mourning to re-dawning of her life.------------- Harriet Klausner

    Best yet from Patti Hill

In Every Flower is the best of the Garden Gate Series. Hill's characters have become more believable, lovable and REAL with each of the three books. The very common struggles of dealing with mothers-in-law and adolescent boys draw the reader in and make us really CARE about Mibby and her new husband. Hill writes as if these were her best friends and neighbors. I'm sorry we won't learn whether there will be a new baby in the household.
