Children's Literature
A brief, lyrical text moves from one image to another with a dreamlike quality. The image of the moon elicits a thought of a tree which leads to the idea of lace and continues through a cloud, the sea, words, birds, flowers, a star, a child, the sky, dreams, and a butterfly before circling back to the moon. Each framed page of text with just the word being described is faced with a whimsical painting illustrating the imaginative images invoked by the word and by the brief explanation provided beneath the picture. A young girl in a flowing nightgown appears in each illustration as she contemplates the variety of ideas inspired by the moon. The reader is asked in the beginning to look and listen with the heart because this is a story that words cannot tell. A good springboard for imaginative thinking or for a quiet bedtime story. 2003, A Terri Cohlene Book/Illumination Arts, Ages 3 to 6.—Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
