Overview

Susie Yovic Hoeller tells her story about growing up on the West Island of Montreal when the city was the cosmopolitan jewel of Canada. In 1963, as a nine-year-old girl, she posed as a boy to play hockey in an organized league. The same year, she underwent open heart surgery performed by a young doctor who was later awarded the Order of Canada for his contributions to medicine.

Readers are transported back to the Beatles concert at the Forum, Expo 67, Trudeaumania, the Expos at Jarry Park, and the 1976 Summer Olympics. Susie recounts personal vignettes about the “mukluks and mudrooms” of Baie D’Urfé, sailing on Lake St. Louis, skiing in the Laurentians, dining at the famous restaurant, Ruby Foo’s, and her American born parents adjusting to singing “God Save the Queen” at the local movie theatre.

In Exile from My Montreal is a must read for everyone who loves Canada and for all others who enjoy true stories which illuminate a unique time and place which no longer exists.
