Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Abt has written about bicycling for the New York Times and International Herald Tribune since 1977. In High Gear is thoroughly entertaining, interesting, and extremely well written. Anyone who has watched a pro bike race in person or on TV will be immediately wrapped up in the 20 stories and articles which are collected here. U.S. readers will not be disappointed either, since ample coverage is given to famous American pros Greg LeMond and Andy Hampsten. Descriptions of the various races on the European circuit are excellent, with good detail of terrain, climate, and the emotional feel of the race. While not all pro riders and races of the 1980s are included, it seems as if most of them are: Bernard Hinault, Pedro Delgado, Paris-Roubaix, Giro d'Italia, Tour de France. Highly recommended.-- Thomas K. Fry, UCLA Libs.
