All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
By 2004 it was getting a little difficult to tell groups like AFI, My Chemical Romance, Thrice, or the Used apart. All mixed the energy of punk, emo-derived passion, and metal sensibilities into a well-played, expensively-produced package. But the end product often ended up sounding a little similar. Though its heart is eventually lost amidst the guiding elements of the genre, the Used's In Love and Death does make some impressive moves away from those very same tenets, showing some welcome restraint and even some rocktastic energy.
"I Caught Fire" is irresistible, because it uses its big-budget filters and six-string layers as an advantage, building tension for the song's triumphant chorus release. "Take It Away" sees the inherent, timeless power of a solid riff, and actually revitalizes the ridiculously played-out singing guy/screaming guy dynamic that so many groups in this scene faithfully rely on. "Cut Up Angels," too, is a nice departure, offering fans a modified pop gem that lightens the album's mood considerably. Unfortunately, it still sticks to formula. There are the overwrought string and piano sections, impassioned lyrics, dense arrangements of metal chording and tortured screaming. These sounds have their place, no question. But if all that depression and heartbreak begins to bleed into the diary of the next guy over, it becomes less unique. Still, The Used have made some strides with In Love and Death toward a fuller sound. and it'll be interesting to see what their next move is. [The album was re-released in 2005 with the addition of a bonus track; the group's collaboration with My Chemical Romance on a version of the Queen/David Bowie collaboration "Under Pressure."]

    This album is effin AWESOME!!

This is by far one of the best albums I have ever heard!! Bert has a voice that can move anyone (who has a heart)!! and with an amazing band to back him up what could go wrong!? And their cover of Under Pressur is awesome...it is done so true to the original...David Bowie would be proud!! I LOVE THE USED!!

In Love and Death [Bonus Track]

Wow this CD is horrible. As I listen to CD, there were no songs in here that made me happy. The songs were disappointing and then came the song Under Pressure. How could the Used and MCR fail to make a good song?

In Love and Death [Bonus Track]

The song Take It Away starts off the album In Love and Death and will take away you're happy time. Under Pressures end the album, but the damage is already made. If I wanter to hear krap, I would krapped in a box and label it The Used.

In Love and Death [Bonus Track]

...I not only lost 15 dollars but I got headache from listening to you. With you voice that is irritating, riffs that are unappealing, and no catchy riffs or solos.

    Album fails to rock...

...n roll. The album In Love and Death features 12 songs and a remake of the song Under Pressure by Queen and David Bowie. The album however failed to catch my attention and ended up irate after listening to Under Pressure. The song starts off with Take It Away.

    In garbage and junk.

Do you see what I see? Do you know what I know? Music is slamming shut Music is losing it, Used is no good. The rock band, The Used really sucks just like the songs. The song, Take It Away is incovincing and Let It Bleed is a poor excuse for rock music. I'm A Fake and Cut Up Angels is not for them because they are fakes. If you don't like what I wrote then Poor Twisted Me, Poor Mistreated Me.

    Sweet

This cd is totally awesome. All the songs on here rock and The Used is really good and is actually easy to tell apart from other bands like My Chemical Romance if you listen to them a lot.
