The Stockdale’s story of their life in the navy tells the true story of how the United States became involved in the Vietnam war and how it affected one family. The Stockdales wrote the book in the format of alternating chapters by each. Eventually, Admiral Stockdale was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and Mrs. Stockdale was honored with the civilian Distinguised Public Service Award. Their story is not one for the weak-hearted, but the truth is told. Admiral Stockdale was shot down and survived seven years as a POW, while his wife, Sybil, did all she could to raise their children and work to get the prisoners released. All of their work was eventually successful. I recommend this book to all who have been born subsequent to the Vietnam war, as they will learn history from those who made it.

I just want to thank all of the men and women who protect us and are willing to go through what Mr. Stockdale did. This is a great read and allows you to see both the war front and home front.
