The nativities range from beautifully simple, to extremely intricate. All were fascinating to Betsy and were a thrill to discover. Crèche collecting has been a popular pastime for centuries. For some time there has been a group called Friends of the Crèche in Europe. The United States joined this group about a dozen years ago and now the group is strong here and collecting nativities is very popular. A quarterly newsletter, the Crèche Herald, is now available to all.

Meet the Author

This book represents Betsy Christensen's sixty-five-year passion for viewing, studying, and collecting nativities (crèches) from around the world. Her first significant crèche was a hand-carved nativity she purchased in Switzerland after a summer's literature class in London. It began a passion for collecting and studying nativities from around the world, especially those reflecting unique cultural viewpoints of Christ's birth. At home in Michigan, when she became aware of many church friends' crèches and a few artists who created their own, the Ann Arbor Michigan Crèche Exhibit was born. That initial Crèche Exhibit grew into a 25-year Christmas tradition, eventually displaying over 1,000 rotating nativity scenes, representing 111 countries by 2007, its final year. In addition, her passion had sparked crèche exhibits in over fifty cities in North America. She has also been active in the Friends of the Crèche Organization and was one of Michigan's early featured speakers. Later she also received an award from them for her efforts in promoting crèche activities.

    Outstanding words and pictures

This is absolutely a superb book. It contains beautiful photos of a diverse set of creches, the work of artists, craftsmen, loving amateurs and commercial manufactureres. Many countries, cultures and media are represented.

In addition to the wonderful "eye candy" are the thoughtful words selected to accompany each image. Because they are not the frequently seen hymns and poems, more thought and prayer go into reading them.

As a perfect trifecta, notes on the individual creches make the book even more meaningful.

I bought copies of the book for myself and two fellow chreche collectors who loved it as much as I. Although availability missed Christmas, this is a book for all seasons. It is one more contribution Betsey has made to the creche world, starting with her exhibit. THANK YOU.
