Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Gabel's debut novel centers on two longtime best friends with very different perspectives about entering ninth grade. Shy, timid Nola, who "usually went unnoticed in a crowd," is terrified of starting high school. Self-confident, boy-crazy Marnie, who has always lived in the shadow of her popular older sister, is excited to "totally reinvent herself." She assures Nola that they will soon become "two of the most popular girls in our class.... And of course, no matter what happens, we'll always have each other." The story follows a predictable path, as Marnie worms her way into the popular posse, led by mean girl Lizette, who possesses the power to decide "what's in and what's out, not to mention who'sin and who's out." Nola, of course, is "out," and is crushed when her "in" pal increasingly ignores her. She finds solace in the attention that a kind, cute boy pays her, yet again feels let down when she discovers that he has a long-distance girlfriend. Meanwhile, Marnie reels in a "preppie demigod and all-around amazing" sophomore, who of course (Nola discovers) is a bit of a cad. The tale brims with references to fashion and pop culture. Gabel ably captures each girl's point of view and she leaves several strands of plot hanging-unresolved issues that will be taken up in the second installment, due this fall. Ages 12-up. (June)

Best friends since forever, Marnie and Nola are about to learn that in high school, you're either in or out. In things include: hot upperclassmen, vintage denim, Lizette Levin, and (maybe) Marnie. Out things include: shaggy-haired musicians, handmade jewelry, Lizette Levin's enemies, and (maybe) Nola. It is time to pick sides. This is a present-day, true-to-life story about early high school relationships and what youth will do to fit in. Sometimes even close longtime friends do not fit in with the path that looks good. This teen-oriented story asks the tough, ageless question: What do you do with old friends if your path takes you in a different direction? What do you do and how do you not hurt people? Teens will likely recognize the sense of difficulty because of growing and changing. This is a good, up-to-date reflective story.

The first book in the In or out series follows two best friends, Nola and Marnie who are starting high school. Marnie wants to be noticed by the popular girl Lizette. Marnie covers for her in gym class and they become friends. Marnie then joins the popular crowd and is constantly ditching Nola. They stop being friends and the rest of the series is about them finding themselves, about their friendship, what being ex-best friends is like with someone who you never thought would leave your life.

Okay, I just finished reading the whole In or Out series, and i like it better than Twilight!! I got this book last year, read it, and loved it. I couldnt sleep untill i read the second one, which i stayed up all night to finish. Then, i let my best friend read it, and she had the same obsession as me. In this book, there are two girls, Nola James and Marnie Fitzpatrick, who have been friends their whole life. Nola is known for being she and quiet, while Marnie on the other hand, is loud and outgoing. On the first day of high school, Nola makes a horrible first impression on the most popular girl in school, Lizette Levin. Unfortunatly, this means that Nola will never be "IN". On the other hand, Marnie makes a great first impression, and eventually her and Lizette become friends. Nola is not happy with this, and even though she doesnt tell her, she feels like Marnie is ditching her for her new "friends". Marnie fails to see this and keeps ditching Nola in her time of need. Nola quickly becomes good friends with a boy named Matt Heatherly, and before she knows it, shes head over heels for him. Nola has know idea how to handle this boy crisis without Marnie, but she has to. Marnie is also having some boy drama, with her knew crush, Dane. Eventually, Nola gets sick of all of Marnie's BS and decides they should end their friendship. Marnie thinks that Nola is being selfish. This book is great! It switches off from Nola's POV to Marnie's so you get to know what both of them are thinking. I HIGHLYYYY RECOMENDD!

I could relate so much to this book and the series. Its just so real. This book is about two girls who are the best of freinds going into high school. What they don't know is that they are breaking apart. Marnie soars to the popular crowd because of her sisters popularity and Nola just stays without it. Many things happen between them like fights and other things that you will know if you read this book. It relates to me so well because my best friend in the whole world in fifth grade was Kelley. Then when we got to middle school I dont know but we pulled apart just like in the book. However, we did'nt pull any tricks on each other we just stopped talking. And its just emotional to think about this book and my life together. In the next few books in the rest of the series its just like a roller coaster ride and i loved every moment of reading it. I could NOT put this book down it was just so unbelievable. Now me Kelley kind of talk but theres no way we'll be like we used to which isn't a book like this at all. There is no happy ending in life like this book. However, in the next book you'll see everything change. Then in the last book they'll come together and be close but not like they used to. Please read this book its just soo good. It is not a waste a money because any teenage girl like me can relate to this book.

The crucial part of high school, or of any social scene, is to fit in, to be noticed... in a good way. To not be the one that gets picked on but more like the one who everyone wants to be around. For best friends Nola and Marnie, their first day in high school as freshmen will ultimately result in whether they make it into the right crowd. But no worries, since they both promised each other that whoever gets in first will make sure the other does, too.

Unfortunately, there's only room for one of them.

Nola is the quiet one who definitely values her best friend status with Marnie and likes everything the way it is. Who needs change? Getting into the right crowd just doesn't matter, as long as she has her best friend right by her side. Being the klutz that she is, a little incident on the first day of school could make her so OUT.

Marnie, the outgoing one, has to live up to her older sister, Erin's, standards. Just saying her sister's name can easily get her noticed. But does she really want to just be known as Erin's little sister? Sure, if it can get her into the IN crowd.

Two friends, who thought they had each others' backs, will have their friendship tested, since high school can totally do that. Promises will be broken, friendships will be made, and, of course, teenage boys will make it all the more interesting.

The IN OR OUT series is the next guilty pleasure. Full of so much competition and a whole lot more drama, Claudia Gabel makes sure that we all know how dangerously scary high school can be. Nola is the one everyone will root for while Marnie is the one every girl wants to be. A quick and easy read that fans of THE CLIQUE series and MEAN GIRLS will definitely want to read.

This book is one of the best books I have ever read and I've got to put it at the top of my recommended books list right in frount of 'Are You There God It's me Margret'. I can't wait to read 'Loves me, Loves me not'. I just got 'In or Out' at my school book fair but they didn't have 'Loves me, Loves me not' I would have completely gotten it. I suggest you read this book.
