    Better than I expected

I was hoping for a synopsis of Jefferson's life. I received an excellent synopsis of Jefferson's life, a vivid picture of what was going on at the time and a clear description of the contributions he made to the formation of the United States at it's establishment and during those first few decades. Jefferson's influence on present day America is evident in the pages of this well-researched biography. I recommend this remarkable book to anyone interested in the beginnings of our nation and how those beginnings have resulted in the subsequent influence we have enjoyed ever since.

    Disappointing

The author danced around Jefferson's religious convictions, weakening and fogging up his portrait of the great man. Too bad he didn't opt for more honesty and less pandering.

    Good one volume biography

This is a good one volume biography of Jefferson. Cunningham was a Jefferson scholar at the University of Missouri. He has, according to the biographical blurb in the book, 4 other books about Jefferson or some aspect of his life. The writing isn't what one would expect of a scholar. Not quite breezy, but definitly not a thick academic type of book.

One note: There is only a passing mention of Sally Hemings and the controversy over wether Jefferson fathered any of her children. The copyright on the book is 1987, so it pre-dates the DNA testing done on Jefferson's descendants. ( I believe the DNA tests were done in the mid to late 90's).

All in all a readable book that any fan of early american history would be interested in.
