Megan Smolenyak's inspiring work, 'In Search of Our Ancestors,' is a major addition to the field of genealogy, in general, and an inspiration to genealogists of all stripes, in particular. The book recounts the experiences of people from all over the world who sought their kindred dead. Most of the individuals in the book hit roadblocks along the way, only to be helped by kind strangers, remarkable and happy coincidences and, oftimes, an unseen hand. The book begs the question if the many happy and unexpected experiences described within can be fobbed off as mere coincidence or if unseen forces are at work helping us as we seek out those who came before. I am both a family history consultant as well as a professional, full-time genealogist and I recommend this book to all with whom I come in contact. Indeed, to date (Dec. 2000), I have personally purchased over 50 copies to give away as gifts to my students and clients and have received, in return, universal praise for it. I believe that the reason the book is so popular is because it resonates so clearly in the hearts of those who have done their own family history research only to find their own personal serendipity--similar to that described in the book. Finally, 'In Search of Our Ancestors' is useful as an instructional tool. Through the many seat-of-your-pants research experiences described within, both the amateur and professional genealogist gain heuristic knowledge as to the many ways to approach research problems. Was this review helpful? Please don't miss this book, whether you're a 'newbie' to genealogy, have had the 'bug' for years, or would just enjoy wonderful, true stories of person's searching for their 'roots'. I enjoyed this book so much, I forced myself to limit my daily reading to two stories a day, thus savoring it to the last. It was a sad day, in that regard, when the book came to a close. One can hope a second collection will be published by this author in the future. Don't let yourself MISS this book! The next one can't get here too soon! Was this review helpful? Since I bought this book, I've spent many enjoyable moments sharing others' searches for their ancestors. It's amazing what lengths some people have to go through to find them, while others have almost unbelievably good luck. I was touched, educated and entertained. Make time to enjoy it yourself! Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
