Overview

Now and then, a deep and quenching reservoir of strength can be found in the shadows of fear, pain and sadness. A strength that can help and guide you through even the most difficult times. The book "In Shadow and Strength" is about the strength found in the shadows of a little girl's destructive childhood. A strength powerful enough to sustain the child and help heal the adult she becomes.

Written in a compelling, compassionate voice, this unusual book tells its story by pulling together the fractured pieces of an abusive childhood. Each chapter opens a new door into a little girl's painful, chaotic life. You walk with her through various moments in time as she struggles to understand and exist is a destructive environment. A world where she is hurt and neglected instead of loved and nurtured by those who are supposed to love and protect her.

You see, feel, taste, and smell this little girls fear and confusion. You also discover her strength, resilience and instinct for survival. You witness how a child's inner resources keep her whole and moving forward. And how that reservoir of strength helps her heal some deep and lasting emotional wounds later in life. Both heartbreaking and uplifting, this story is honest and filled with hope.

The book also shares the unique writing method that allowed the author to look back at her tragic beginnings in a way that helped her move beyond some of the pain and debris left in her path. By observing the past, not reliving it.

Editorial Reviews

www.inshadowandstrength.com - Onno van der Hart, Ph.D.
I am impressed with Beth Louise’s poignant writing style and the honest testimony she shares of her traumatic childhood and path to healing, and by the unique ‘formula’ she uses to so empathically bear witness to the suffering and more she experienced as a child. As she talks about the process she followed, Beth presents very helpful suggestions, offering a most inviting opening for similar healing journeys that others can begin for themselves. The book should be widely read

In this aptly titled book “In Shadow and Strength,” Beth Louise shares the story of her tragic childhood and how she learned to put it into words by engaging in an empathic dialogue with herself as a child...replacing shame and confusion with pride in herself and clarity about what happened to her... and holding up a beacon to the many others who have had similarly traumatic pasts. Beth also gives information about her writing method in hopes of helping other survivors.

"In Shadow and Strength" is an important book and a beautifully told personal tale of abuse as a child. Unfortunately, we now know that the consequences of childhood trauma are carried forward into adult life. Time does not heal. Time conceals, often even for the individual involved."In Shadow and Strength" is a beacon of understanding and hope for those many adults abused as children who feel alone, bereft of understanding, and who are isolated by shame and by their own secrecy.

In this moving and compelling book, Beth Louise visualizes the abuse and neglect she experienced as a child from the point of view of her adult self. Capturing in a remarkable way the thoughts and emotions that take hold of a child in the middle of a spiral of abuse and neglect. Victims of abuse can learn a powerful new technique to help themselves come to terms with their past. Non-victims can better appreciate the terror, guilt, helplessness and uncertainty felt by abused children everywhere.

A great book you must read. Very special. The book was recommended to me, and I am glad I took the advice. The way it is written with stand-alone chapters is unique. I've never come across a book structure quite like it. You can open up to any chapter and read something special that grabs your interest and makes you want to read more. The writing is superb and the message is important. I felt like I was right there beside a little girl struggling to make sense of a world that made no sense at all. I really cared about her journey. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, whether or not you lived through a painful childhood.

I read this book in one sitting. I stayed up late into the night because I could not put the book down. The way In Shadow and Strength is written is transfixing and very different from anything else I've read. You really come to know this little girl personally and learn a lot about the woman she becomes as well. They make quite a team. Theirs is a inspiring and powerful story that I will not soon forget!

An exceptional book. It is honest, perceptive, engaging, and easy to read. I couldn’t put it down. The book is about a healing experience, and a great testimonial to the strength and resilience of both child and adult. I have to mention the artwork too. It really adds to the whole experience. Beth Louise created something really special here. Really special.

This book is different. "In Shadow and Strength" is NOT just another story about an abusive childhood. "In Shadow and Strength" is a testimonial to what is possible for those of us living with painful backgrounds. The book is a tapestry of fragmented memories that build upon each other to uncover the truths of a child's traumatic existence, showcasing her strength and resilience in the face of such horror, and forming a bridge to healing. The author finds a way to move past the pain of her tragic beginnings and inspires us by her example.

What an engaging story. So truthful and real. So haunting, yet heartening. I forgot everything else for a while and just enjoyed reading the book. It is written beautifully and with a unique style. Every chapter can stand alone, but builds momentum and encourages you to read on. I’ll read this again and again.
