In Six Months You Get Bananasby Lucy Baker
Janey in a stumbling start is emotionally bruised but eventually finds romance while
Carrie Throckmorton and Janey Thebom meet briefly on an airplane carrying them to St. Helen in the Caribbean. After tumultuous events, they meet again, having made adjustments to adapt to island living which has been far more intense and dangerous than either thought possible.
Janey in a stumbling start is emotionally bruised but eventually finds romance while Carrie discovers new values and purpose. The physical beauty of the island and a powerful friend alleviate some of the distress as both women accumulate adventures not altogether desirable.
Cuthbert Willow, the island's extraordinary leader for forty five years, is overthrown and the once stable island government crumbles. Holland by constitutional right, sends in a horde of administrative experts who further jeopardize the economic and political scene by manipulating the weakened, quarreling administration whose members are politically effete.
Amid political unrest, a massive crime wave and strident tax measures, our heroines are so assailed by problems as to wonder why they came to St. Helen.
Drawn to the bar scene, where everything that occurs on St. Helen is publicly dissected, Carrie and Janey discover the world of the barscouts, a bawdy group of men who are an integral part of everything that goes on,
Janey temporarily returns to New York and Carrie remains to experience the horror of a force four hurricane while alone in the little house on the sea. Gradually Carrie finds some admirable people while trying to adjust to the shock of rampant cultural diversities and being the subject of a personal vendetta that includes voodoo curses, burned sacrifices and pernicious burglaries.
The island experience changes the lives of both women, forever. One finds the courage to remain on St. Helen and the other returns to the United States, unwilling to suffer any more losses or to live in a society where as a foreigner she is barely tolerated.
The banana tree was twelve inches high when a neighbor gave it to her saying, "Plant this, in six months you get bananas," and she did.
