Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Spending the day with Grandma usually entails trips to the movies, lemonade stands, and amusement parks. Today Rosie is going to spend time at "Haircraft," where Grandma works as a hair stylist. Rosie is not happy anticipating her day at "work," but things turn out to be great fun as she collects tips for doing errands, gets her own nails polished, and saves the day by finding a lost wig and a missing little boy. The bold, stylized illustrations are well matched with the text, although, I would have chosen different cover art. The strong colors and eclectic style add to the "fun" approach to a day spent in a salon. This story gives an accurate look at careers in the beauty industry and shows the loving relationship between Rosie and her Grandma. All of the ladies at the salon enjoy having Rosie spend the day with them. This is a good-natured display of a community situation in which everyone pitches in to get work done while having a good time and caring for each other. 2005, Tanglewood Press, Ages 3 to 5.

K-Gr 2-A little girl's visit to the hair salon where her grandmother works forms the basis of this book. While Rosie is initially reluctant to spend the day at her grandma's new workplace, she quickly discovers that she is anything but bored. Rather, she has the opportunity to be Grandma's assistant and is treated to a little pampering herself in the form of a manicure. She gains additional satisfaction when she is able to resolve the crisis of a client's errant child and another's missing wig. Caseley's detail-rich, colorful illustrations help advance the story. Useful for units highlighting employment and careers, this is also a novel twist on intergenerational picture books.-Rosalyn Pierini, San Luis Obispo City-County Library, CA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Caseley's trendy tale of hair salon hijinks will appeal to the inner divas of young readers. Rosie is dismayed to discover that she has to spend the day at the beauty parlor with her grandma. From manicures to highlights, from wigs to waxing, Rosie explores the shop while her grandmother works; the addition of a mischievous boy and a missing wig add a little excitement. Caseley gives would-be beauty queens an insider's peek at the operations of the salon industry. She also incorporates reader interaction: After describing various salon treatments, readers are prompted to choose which option they would select. The collage-style illustrations capture the organized havoc that is a working salon; readers are bombarded with an amalgamation of textures and eye-popping hues. The many details Caseley supplies in her illustrations, both in the forefront of the spreads, as well as in the backgrounds, will serve to pique readers' interest. Frivolous but fun, this delivers a tantalizing, humorous exhibition of the ups and downs of this secret world of glamour. (Picture book. 4-8)
