The Orient has long been a source of fascination and inspiration to Western designers and decorators and never more so than today, with the popularity of Zen, feng shui and the concept of home as a place of tranquillity and refuge. From Asia come not just lattice screens. lacquerwork, floor cushions, porcelain and blinds but also a broader, less tangible dynamic: an approach to living that encompasses intercommunicating spaces, a merging of interior and exterior, and the integration of expanses of water into the overall design. By placing emphasis on the quality of space, of materials and of craftsmanship, the Asian concept of style results in not just a sensual minimalism but a harmony of pattern, structure and function.
Appealing to homeowners and professional designers alike, In the Asian Style unravels the threads of these oriental influences and by illustrating their application to different areas of the house shows how the Asian mood -- Chinese, Thai, Indonesian, Malaysian or Japanese -- can be created anywhere. An outdoor bathroom in Bali can inspire a similar one in Australia or South Africa, while a Singaporean living room can be re-created in London or New York.
Fiona Dunlop travelled widely with photographer Kim Sayer in search of the locations in Asia that best represent the essence of oriental design today. With around 200 photographs and authoritative yet highly readable text, In the Asian Style begins by taking the reader through the historical background to Asian decorative styles and techniques, be they clean and minimalist or profusely patterned and detailed. Subsequent chapters are deveoted firstly to the structures of the Asian house -- its walls and partitions, ceilings and floors; secondly to the different areas of the home according to their function -- living, eating, washing, resting; and finally that key Asian element, the space where inside meets outside -- the courtyard and the veranda, in which water and the natural environment play their vital roles. Five feature articles focus specifically on bamboo, lacquer, ceramics, basketware and textiles. An informatively written and inspiring sourcebook of ideas for home decorators, professional designers and artists, In the Asian Style is a fascinating exploration of oriental design and decorating solutions both modern and timeless. It is the ideal reference for anyone interested in design and style.
