Overview

In the Belly of Jonah is a fast-paced mystery with a likable protagonist and an intricately woven narrative brimming with bizarre yet believable twists. The first in a series, the book expertly lays the groundwork for Liv Bergen, amateur sleuth, and her love interest, FBI Agent Streeter Pierce.
Liv becomes involved in the investigation of the murder of Jill Brannigan, a summer intern at the limestone mine Liv manages near Fort Collins, Colorado (a breathtaking setting that unwittingly becomes an accessory to crime). In doing so, she inadvertently puts her friends, her family, and herself at risk of being swallowed in the belly of a madman bloated with perverse appetites for women, surrealistic art, and renown.
Perhaps a bit too daring (and at times irreverent) for her own good, ''Boots,'' as Liv's eight siblings call her, soon realizes she has a knack for outsmarting and tracking down the Venus de Milo murderer--and she enjoys it! As the gripping plot of In the Belly of Jonah unfolds, Liv Bergen takes her place alongside the best female crime-solvers as a woman with smarts, self-confidence, and intuitive savvy.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
When a summer intern, the apparent victim of a serial killer, is found brutally murdered at a Colorado mine managed by Liv Bergen, the FBI is called in. Bergen joins in the hunt with FBI agent Streeter Pierce. VERDICT The standard elements of romantic suspense are here, but Brannan's series debut adds nothing special to the genre. Look to Alex Kava and Iris Johansen for more exciting reads.

    Excellent!

What an interesting story! Although the book started out a little more gruesome than I like, the creepy feeling as the story moves through the gory details creates the necessary feeling of the evil from the serial killer.

When Liv Bergen's former schoolmate and FBI profiler turns her home into a command post for the investigation of the murder of Liv's employee, she has no choice but to get involved. This is a very suspenseful story that does well to introduce each character and develop the relationships throughout. The character of Liv is a strong, smart, independent and likeable female character.

I loved that there were hints of a possible romance and enjoyed watching for the early developments between the two characters. I can't wait for the next book in this series.

Creepy and Freaky - A Perfect Mystery! (Turn the lights on)

Sandra Brannan's first installment in the Liv Bergen Mystery Series is a serial killer story unlike others. Peppered with wit, self-deprecation, and moments of stunning brutality, In the Belly of Jonah magically captures the intense paths of both the serial killer and the one in which to stop him. This killer is freakish, elusive, but generally "normal," inasmuch as someone who likes to kill, can be. Liv is honest and real, innocently figuring out each step of the puzzle to its frightening conclusion. Liv is a smart chick who can easily hold her own with the best of them - whether they are part of her quarry-mining team or with the FBI, she's not one to back down. And in this story, she can't back down because whether she likes it or not, she has a serial killer to stop.

If you like Harlan Coban and Patricia Cornwall, you should probably rush right out to get this one for your bookshelf.

    Kritters Ramblings

What a thriller! I have had this book on my shelf with the sequel for a few weeks and I was just able to work it into the schedule. A woman in the mining industry who is holding her own amongst the men ends up in the middle of not one but two murder investigations that are clearly linked, but how?

With each thriller/suspense that I read I love the genre even more. This one definitely held up to those big name suspense authors. A little on the gory side, but packed full of who dun its. I found myself in the middle of the book waffling between two characters and I just couldn't put my finger on the real culprit. I loved this. Nothing irks me more than the person who is the killer only popping up in the end of the book with no way to guess of his involvement.

Brannan effortlessly weaves the killer in and out of the reader's thoughts, while giving hints but no definite clues. A must read for those who love a good suspense but watch out because the reader has a bird's eye view when the murders occur.

    Great read!

In the Belly of Jonah is a fantastic debut mystery. The author manages the almost impossible feat of making the serial killer terrifying, but not so repulsive or nasty that you want to stop reading. Liv Bergen, the story's amateur detective, has the very unusual job of running a mining company. The many details and terrific atmosphere at the limestone quarry make for a unique setting. I can't wait for more books in the series.

    Bridget's Review

While reading In the Belly of Jonah, I couldn't help but be in awe. It's not very often that I become addicted to an author just from reading their first novel. Sarah's book is a breath of fresh air and her writing ability is unbelievable. If you're a mystery fan, you will love this book.

I LOVE A GREAT MYSTERY - "In the Belly of Jonah" was GREAT!

I'm an avid reader of the mystery/thriller genre and I just read "In the Belly of Jonah" - I LOVED IT! The main character of "In the Belly of Jonah" is a smart, young, independent, irreverent and very spunky woman named Liv Bergen who runs a limestone mine near Fort Collins, Colorado. Liv gets caught up in solving a murder investigation when she discovers the body of a summer intern (who worked for her in the mine) with a "window" cut into her body. The reader discovers who the killer is relatively early in the book and this "inside knowledge" keeps you on the edge of your seat as Liv and the investigative team try to solve the murder. There are also some unexpected twists and turns that added to the excitement. I especially got a kick out of Liv's sense of humor, and I'm looking forward to seeing how Ms. Brannan further develops Liv (her eight siblings call her "Boots") in the 2nd book of the Liv Bergen mystery series.

Sandra Brannan, is a relatively new author to the Mystery/Thriller genre so I was intrigued and did a little research after I read her book. This is her first novel in the Liv Bergen series, and it has already grabbed the attention of Independent Booksellers across the US (a pretty good indication of a great book!). "In the Belly of Jonah" was recently named as a notable in the Mystery/Thriller genre for the Indie Next Pick by the American Booksellers Association.

"In the Belly of Jonah" is a fast-paced, real page-turning thriller that was hard for me to put down. I simply loved it and would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a great mystery!
    Enjoy!
