In The Buddha's Words is a Tour de Force. Bhikkhu Bodhi has done it again! For the intermediate or experienced Buddhist, this is an essential addition to your library. I have read and struggled with the Digha, Majjhima, Samyutta and Angutara Nikayas. This anthology seperates the wheat from the chaff, by providing a thematic structure for an otherwise unwieldy collection of discourses. Bhikkhu Bodhi's skillfully crafted introductions help to illuminate the meaning and context of the discourses in each chapter. This anthology asks too much of the reader to be a suitable introduction to Buddhism, but for the Buddhist who is ready to move beyond introductory texts, this is the next step before investing the money, time and effort into studying the Nikayas.

This book is impressive. The commentary is clear, concise and very readable. For one who seeks to develop an understanding of the Buddha's teaching, this is the place to start.

For a relative newcomer to reading about the teachings of the Buddha, my cousin highly recommend that this book be one of the first I read. He assured me it would be my favorite. Indeed he is correct! This is a fabulously translated and written anthology. Not only are the infinitely wise teachings of the Buddha clearly articulated to the unacquainted reader, the eloquence with which the Buddha sure spoke is also transmitted to the reader via Bhikkhu Bodhi's masterfully done translation. I could not recommend this book more to those interested in learning more about the Buddha and his teachings.

This book is fantastic. The author removes repeatative speech passed down from oral tradition and organizes sections spread throughout the the Pali cannon into well defined subjects. This was my first Buddhist book to read and has continued to be my favorite yet. Cant recommend this book enough.

The best Buddhist anthology available. Bodhi's introductions to each chapter are worth the price of the book. Bodhi's desire to present the essence of the Tathagata's original teachings makes this a must for serious students. It is also a good introduction for those who would like to progress to the translations of the Nikayas which are part of this series. Stay away from the nook book and enjoy the ability to reference chapters, refer to footnotes and use the index.
