On this two-disc live set, Waters concentrates on material from the Floyd's most commercially viable period, spanning, roughly, Dark Side of the Moon to The Wall. Does he add anything relevant to the much-heard songs in the process? Well, yes and no. Although the basic structures of etched-in-the-consciousness songs such as "Another Brick in the Wall" and "Comfortably Numb" remain essentially unchanged, the scope of Waters's new arrangements -- which include multiple guitars and massed vocals -- are considerably wider than even the cinematic sounds of the originals. In the Flesh doesn't merely trot out radio staples, however. Less obvious pieces such as "Dogs" and the Saucerful of Secrets stunner "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" which makes the most of the interplay between Waters and fellow string-slingers Snowy White and Andy Fairweather-Low add senses of surprise and portent. The second disc starts to drag a bit when Waters slogs through a series of songs from his Amused to Death album, but when those give way to resolute versions of "Brain Damage" and "Eclipse," the heady mood returns in a big way.

Roger Waters' tours of the U.S. during the summers of 1999 and 2000 were a pleasant surprise, since the reclusive rocker had not toured since 1987. In his liner notes to this two-CD set drawn from those performances, Waters does not shy away from discussing his antipathy to big concert venues. But he makes a distinction between stadiums and arenas, and he also notes that he found himself becoming more comfortable in the role of a frontman. This more personable Roger Waters isn't what comes across on the album, but the closer relationship he perceives to his audience is nevertheless palpable. As the man who wrote Pink Floyd's lyrics, he is far more concerned with their meaning than his old bandmates, and his singing is emphasized without robbing the music of its magisterial power. In fact, with a band boasting several guitarists to make up for the lack of David Gilmour, Waters effectively re-creates the sound of his Pink Floyd work, which dominates the set list. The album contains only five selections out of 24 from Waters' solo albums: one track from The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking and four from Amused to Death, with Radio K.A.O.S. left out completely. He does not choose the most obvious solo material, but he makes his selections work, especially "Perfect Sense Pts. I & 2" and "It's a Miracle," from Amused to Death. A new song, "Each Small Candle," finds him still obsessed with world problems, but seemingly more optimistic. Waters had seemed to allow his anger about Pink Floyd's continuance without him to keep him from claiming his own part of their legacy. His 1999-2000 touring changed that, and In the Flesh Live makes the point for those who couldn't get to the shows.

    Butchered!

    This album was a technological oddity that disappointed me. As both a Pink Floyd fan (anything made after Waters left, I ignored) and a Roger Waters fan i was disappointed yet again when Waters' band butchered EVERY Floyd song they attempted to perform. They hit every one of Waters songs from his solo career right on the money (no pun intended), but failed in every other aspect with needless and random guitar solos and a butchered version of "Dogs" that included TERRIBLE vocals.

    please remember that what we look for in a SACD review is the surround sound, the remastering of the CD not the review of the original music or what you think of pink floyd music!!!

    Fantastic

    A great sequence of music in a very different order, the guitar players are almost as good as gilmour himself, the greatest part was the transition from get your filthy hands off my desert to south hampton dock. so beautifully played.

    Again Roger Waters writes a powerfull new song, one candle. If you could hear someones soul, this is it.

    A Timeless Classic

    This album could very well be seen as a celebration album containing many classic Floyd tunes and a new song by Waters ''Each Small Candle''. The music is nicely arranged and contains a variety of songs from early Pink Floyd such as ''Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun'' to later works by Waters such as ''Its a Miracle''. Roger Waters as long as he's been around still manages to bring his fans through a musical journey unlike anyother.
