Children's Literature - Summer Whiting
This book will introduce a barnyard favorite, the goat, to young readers. It contains interesting facts that will make young people fall in love with this endearing creature. Did you know baby goats can stand and walk soon after birth? Or that after just a few short weeks, the kid will be able to eat grass? Readers will learn that the doe's milk is important to the farmer. Goats are raised not only for their milk but also for their meat and hides. The average age span for the goat is somewhere between eight and twelve years and they are incredibly intelligent animals. A diagram is located in the back of the book and illustrates the hoof, udder, and tail, among other parts. A short glossary and an index can be found, as well as a list of fun facts. This is a good read for young readers and would assist students in both the lower and upper grades during the animal unit. It is, however, pricey for the amount of information presented. The illustrations are very basic and include a limited color palette, which may bore reluctant readers. This book would, however, be a nice introduction to using the glossary and index. PreS-Gr 1—Each title has a dual text, which appears on alternating pages. The large-font, easy-to-read main text presents introductory information about the animal and her young, while the smaller font offers more details. Both books are clearly and simply written. The illustrations are colorful but lack detail and are amateurishly drawn. A labeled diagram and a page of additional facts round out each presentation.—Colleen D.
